Should I buy pro or off-road?

OR doesn’t have a skewp bro, maybe that’s the Cali edition. Also 4x4 is pretty much universally available and is damn near mandatory if you get snow.

Saying a locker isn’t worth it is absurd, even if it’s only for resale value - I’m not saying whatever the price difference for the locker in necessarily worth it, but the simplicity and warranty may be for some folks. Sure you can do an aftermarket one, $1k for the locker, whatever you want to pay for the compressor, labor unless you DIY, RTV and gear oil.

 

Get a limited.

 

That’s is a ridiculous price for an OR. If you can shag an OR for that price then I would say OR all day. I got my pro for 41 even in nor cal. That was the best price I’d heard of for a pro and it took some work to get there. At the time most folks were paying 37 to 38 for the OR. Personally I love my truck and all the little extras. I would lean towards an OR if you really want to change out the suspension

 

I was going to buy a black TRD OR DCSB. I had previously owned an 09 and 16 in that configuration. I wanted a 20 for the seat, CarPlay, and the multi-terrain monitor. When I got serious the only color I could get the MTM in was Voodoo. Went with a Pro to get all of the stuff I wanted, scoop, wheels, exhaust, and decent system integration. The on-road ride and feel was a huge surprise, it my opinion it is awesome. No remorse whatsoever, glad I went with the Pro.

 

as a 2017 Pro owner that will admit I 100% bought mine out of emotional response and convenience, everything I have seen since then leads me to believe there is very little real value in buying the higher trim packages.
My understanding is that the 2020 now has basically given the OR every Pro feature except a few things that are definitely not worth the cost increase. I didn't follow my own advice, buy the cheapest trim package that gets you the drivetrain you want and slap all the surrounding parts on with the money you save. I would replace the suspension, fog lights, tires, exhaust, etc but now i feel financially committed it all. I have used the MTS maybe once a quarter but it could be really valuable if you spend EVERY weekend in the dirt, I definitely didn't need it for 99% of my use.

 

I bought mine from the 3rd selling dealership in the country. I thought they would treat me like shit, but honestly they treated me better than any prior dealership. They move so much volume that they just want to sell as many as they can. I had no trade and I told them going in where I wanted to be. The asking price was 32,500 I believe. They advertise on cars.com and I figured they had to at least meet the advertised price and then I negotiated from there. Great deal for sure!

This cracked me up. I too, have owned both and thought the Pro was much better. I guess someone needs to define what a good ride is. I think the Pro is firmer which I equated to better.

 

Get a vehicle for strictly on road driving. The OR and Pro are not intended as road vehicles as the biggest things that drive the price up are suspension and creature comfort related. Just a thought.

 

I just bought an OR, thought about the Pro, but for the most part it is a lot of bling and some nice goodies. You can go after market and get all the goodies for a better price. Worst case, you buy the Pro and find yourself buying after market suspension, Etc.. You just wasted your money. Just my 2 cents

 

Pro owners get a lot of hate on the TW forum so be warned if you go that route. My advice? Custom order a 2020 Pro with 3-pedals for around $45k and don’t mess with it.

Everyone on here always advises potential buyers to save the money and purchase an OR model. Won’t they don’t tell you is about resale value down the road. Those thousands of dollars that you will spend on an aftermarket suspension, UCA’s, wheels, etc. is basically money down the drain. At the end of the day it’s still an OR model. The vast majority of used Tacoma buyers want to purchase a truck that has NOT been modified. It also limits your pool of buyers and usually decreases resale value. And good luck getting any warranty work done on your modified Tacoma.

That’s my .02 cents on the subject. Also, Pro model production numbers are low, around 5k per year, which helps keep resale value extremely high.

 

Not hating dude. If your buying for resale, ya, go for the Pro. If your gonna wheel it.............well theres alot of good options out there from aftermarket.

This is a true statement. I've tried to stick to stuff that has a Toyota P/N or can be returned to stock cheaply for just this reason. That being said, some tasteful mods never hurt and buy parts that have a resale market (i.e. not cheap as s***, but good quality)
