I'll give him an "A" for effort...but dayum...Id at least have some ground penetrating radar done before I started digging that deep. Finding gold is one thing..but finding BARS of gold is another. The likelyhood of that is really slim to none...

Yep. You WILL dig pull tabs, and bottle caps, and rusty nails, and a bunch of other shit.
But, once in a while, you will dig up something really cool!

So, FINALLLLLLLY, I was able to go out as planned, but MAN, my right arm elbow is HURTING right now... it's been that long since I've last swung a coil!!! I really did expect it though as it was no surprise if my arm hurt a little during/after.

Anyways, here's the beach. During summer time months, it gets pretty packed and the coins flow pretty good during those times. Today, I hit the towel line first and I also tried the "cuts" a little, but the black sand was driving my heater crazy even on low sensitivity. I'm going to wait for the summer time months or, at least, until right around April/May and then come back. Until then, I'm going to hit some of the parks.


Found these in just over an hour. My right arm was really starting to hurt so I just called it a day. Plus, it was really dark out by the time I quit. HAHAHAHAHA, btw, one of those dimes is a "1965". It can NEVER be a '64 or older with me???

I was hoping to find, at least, one quarter, but no such luck at all and I half expected that anyways... but was still hoping. I even swung by/near/around the guard towers. Anywhere where people would normally sit/be at.

 

Why does the black sand mess you up?

 

@samiam and @wilcam47, it helps to "verify target" if you swing one direction and then 90* yourself and swing that direction. If it stays a SOLID tone for say, a dime, then it is typically a good sign. NOT a guarantee, but it helps. I like to walk around in circles at the same time swinging over the target in question.

If the signal starts "breaking up" or has a tendency to "jump around", then it is likely a screw top, pop top, etc or whatever metal characteristic range you are currently viewing.

 

The "minerals", if you will. Saltwater and high content mineral soils screws with VLF type machines. You can counter it, by lowering the "sensitivity", but you start losing considerable depth as well. Plus, it still messes with your machine.

With a PI type machine (i.e. PI = Pulse Induction), it doesn't really get affected by the high minerals... if at all. That is why you want to get a PI machine if you plan on doing certain types of hunts. I have a Garrett Infinium LS for that, but almost bought a Tesoro Sand Shark as well, just never got around to be able to do that.

 

Do you know if minelab 800 has issues with this?

 

@wilcam47 Btw, that I'm aware of, some of the higher end VLF's can be calibrated to the soil conditions... from what I remember... although I could be wrong???

 

I do not know? But any VLF is subject to high mineral soils at some point. THAT is a higher end machine though, so I'm pretty sure you can "set soil conditions"?

I was hunting with a group of guys near Oxnard/Ventura area here in SoCal and the Whites, from what I remember, did pretty damn good on the beach. I had to stick to the dry sand most of the time, where the dudes with the Whites were able to hit more of the "wet" sand (NOTE: NOT the water... just the wet sand... literally).

 

Yeah theres a big operators manual, ive skimmed through it but i did see some settings you can adjust

 

HAHAHAHA, 'MY' soil calibration settings has two configurations I can set it to:
1) lower the sensitivity
2) forget about current target and move on to the next
3) repeat #2
4) repeat #2
5) repeat #2
6)

 

We got about 22" snow on the ground so its going to be a while before i get to really use my machine
