Does your auto climate control ever auto select the defrost/floor vents split setting?

Does your auto mode allow windows to fog up?

My auto climate control turns on AC to dehumidy, but I've never seen it switch into defrost mode even when my windshield/windows are starting to fog on the inside.

I put off alot of body heat so this happens often lately during winter.

Anyway, I found it curious that my auto mode allows some fogging. Previous vehicles have not allowed any fogging on auto mode at all.

To fix this in the Taco, I just hit the defrost button....but that takes it out of auto mode. So what's the point of auto? Lol

 

Agreed, you have to push the windshield defroster button to select the airflow.

 

I can also hit the mode button for split defrost and floor, but that also takes it out of auto.

I just thought the auto climate wouldn't allow it to fog at all. And I guess my F150 was a bigger cab so I wasn't mouth breathing so close to the windshield.

 

I’m coming from a full size as well and I am noticing the same thing as you, a little fogging around the edges. Kind of makes sense though. I’m sure you noticed how close the windshield was to you when you first got in a Tacoma vs your F150. I have seen it change modes on its own though so I guess it just depends on temp, not sure if it measures humidity.

 

Did it actually auto select defrost ever?

 

On warm up it does defrost foot.

But most of the time its foot or panel(face)

 

Parked and idling only or while driving, too?
Still haven't seen it automatically go defrost in mine yet. Just trying to understand the system and adjust my expectations.

I think the split windshield/floor has to do with outside temp. I’ve noticed it split only on very cold mornings, single digits outside. Just my thoughts. I live in CO no fogging for me. I use auto all the time however I shut off the ac all the time. Auto select ac on so I shut it off, I don’t use ac until the outside temp is too warm to cool the cabin.

 

I did notice this morning it switched itself to defrost/floor split. I let her run with the manual defrost on in my driveway then hit the auto button when I jumped in. It then went to split on its own. Outside was 32 degrees. No problems with fogging really. Just noticed it slightly fogs and i have to select defrost manually sometimes instead of auto. Was curious how this auto system works.

 

What i understand about the "auto climate" is it will turn up/down the fan speed depending on temp. Say you turn on auto climate and adjust the temp to HI, it will set the fan to the fastest setting automatically. ex. 80F will turn the fan to maybe 4 bar setting. Pressing any button other than the Temperature dial will break the auto climate mode except defoggers on mirrors and windshiled i think.

Yes, it does go into foot-defrost after engine heats up in cold weather.

Don't think so. Mine warms up quicky especially once I drive away. In auto mode it will not blow the fan at higher speeds until the engine/coolant is warm enough to blow warm air. This usually happen within a couple of minutes of driving.

 

@Hoff I just realized you're in Canada so a little colder there than here... your experience probably differs from mine lol

 

So I have been testing this theory when I too use auto it automatically goes to floor heat. Now if I push the selection of floor and defrost the auto light shuts off, but if you adjust temperature auto function is still working . Wanted to share this with you .

 

If the outside temperature is low enough, it will auto select defrost.

In the region I live in, that isn't enough... I always run defrost and then switch back to auto and then select the mode until I have floor/defrost combo. By doing this, the system will still be running in auto mode but in the air selection you have picked. This is explained on page 382 of the manual.


So in other words, if you select Auto and then adjust the fan speed, the system will maintain your selected fan speed but auto adjust the temperature and mode to maintain auto mode temperature setting. Or if you adjust the mode, the system will adjust fan speed and temperature to maintain to maintain the selected temperature setting.

 

Finally some hardcore proof excellent wish they would have been more transparent about this

 

"If the outside temperature is low enough, it will auto select defrost." I believe this is how it should work. That is how my Subaru Forester works. I just bought my new 2023 Limited, and I keep it in the garage so haven't had a chance to experience this yet. Approximately what temp does this happen at? How low would the temp need to be? Seems like around freezing, which would actually make sense.
