    2 Tacomas? Why not own 3?!? )?!? This was our fleet for a few months (with a nice MGM 4Runner from next door photobombing).

    I had new truck fever pretty bad 2 summers ago and found a deal on a 2014 DCLB I couldn't pass up. I sold my 1 owner supercharged 1st gen here on TW to help fund the purchase with plans to sell my wife's 06 to fund a newer commuter car. With me fixing hers up for sale, she realized how much she loves it and I realized how good it still is, even after 200k, so we've decided to keep it and drive the wheels off it. And in the last year, I realized I shouldn't have sold the 1st gen, but the new truck is really roomy, quiet and smooth.

    If I were in your shoes, OP, I'd 4x4 convert the PreRunner (the devil you know) and buy a fun gas saver (WRX, etc), which is still our plan in the next 5 years.

    You could get into a nice UTV for the price of a used taco....that's what I'd do if I was looking for a dedicated offroad vehicle.

    I second the FJ40! I just became the owner of a second Tacoma. Bought a low milage 15 to daily drive while I continue to build my 04 for 4wd camp trips and light crawling. If I wasn’t unreasonably attached to my 04, I’d buy a FJ60 or FJ55 for my wheeling camping rig and daily drive the second gen.

    I have two of 'em -- a 2003 DC 4WD TRD and a 2015 DC 4x4 TRD. They get used largely interchangeably and in fact, have been modded similarly. I expect to have both for a looong time, and the Gen 1 forever.

    Convert the 2013. It's already 7 years old and wheeled enough to collect pinstripes. Maintaining two vehicles is a pain, especially with an older one from 1995-2000.

    What level of build did you have in mind? Stock 4x4 equivalent? Marlin crawl box? Solid axle swap? :devil:

    I love my 2015 Rav4 as my daily driver and traveler and my Tacoma for work and fun. This way I keep the mileage down on the truck as they are more expensive to replace.

    Well this thread just made the decision even harder, so many options!

    My only worry with the conversion is just that. Only issue I’ve had in 152K miles is a faulty passenger occupancy sensor...that’s it. Gutting the underside of the truck opens the door to reliability issues that otherwise may not have happened. Although I’ve never really heard of the prerunner conversions by members on here ever having any reliability problems. The parts are OEM and the FJ transfer case is IMO much better than stock so idk. Decisions decisions:annoyed:

    I thought I may be odd man out as owner of three. 1 X-runner, 1 pre runner DCLB and 1 DCSB Sport. All 06 models, how this happened I don’t know. All are southern trucks no rust. My advice if you like one truck you’ll like two or more even better.

    I’m actually contemplating the idea of owning 2 Tacomas. In addition to my current one, I’d love to own a 1st gen Single cab 4x4...so I say do it OP :thumbsup:

    I have two 1st gens. But I only have about $6000 in both combined. Both needed a lot of work when I got them.
    Nice thing is low insurance costs, and when I have one taken apart, no rush to get it back on the road. It's fun having a 2.7 and a 3.4. Both 4x4 access cabs 1995s.

    I will eventually get rid of one of them and get a 2nd or 3rd gen when I get a bit more tired of cranking wrenches.

    In a way picking up a 1st Gen would be less hassle and no downtime in your off roading adventures. But converting your built-up pre-runner to a 4x4 holds a level of satisfaction to it. I've definitely considered converting a couple of my 2wd Toyota's to 4wd. I'll vote for converting your pre-runner. :)

    Keep mileage down, why? I am trying to rack mileage up on my vehicles. I have two Tacomas the 2003 has 215,000 and my 2014 has 102,000. Rack em up!

    A second vehicle is the way to go. You don't have to worry about how you are getting to work on Monday if you have a little too much fun on the trail on a Sunday. I know the heresy I am about to suggest, but a Jeep TJ Wrangler is a fun cost effective 4x4 toy. Inexpensive to run and lots of community and after market support.

    Agree..Sadly, my '98 TJ 4cyl with 32's and 3.5" lift is my DD work vehicle that gets better gas mileage than my '05 heavy ass Tacoma. Been torn between keeping the TJ and getting an older FJ cruiser or 4Runner or simply keeping it. It's slow,noisy, very easy to work on, fun during summer and has never left me stranded. Kiddos prefer me keeping it.

    OP, I agree with getting an older 4WD 4runner or landcruiser. Not worth converting your Tacoma to 4WD with 152k miles.

    I see no issue with it buy a mechanically sound 1st gen 4wd with some dings and make it your trail rig keep the 2nd gen as a tow pig and go ham with it.
