definitely going to give it a try, I bought one not too long ago at a HF, unfortunately I don’t own the truck anymore since it started developing other issues in the driveline, I own a Ram 1500 with Hemi that has its own set of noises that sound worse lol, I’ll try it out on that.

yea my taco makes the same noise.
sounds like the infamous hemi tick that most dodge owners just write off.

At least it’s not the 5.0 V8 Coyote BBQ tick / piston slip in the new Ford Mustangs and F150s, that’s been a terrible problem.

I'm not on hear to step on anyone posts, if any one hear decides to spend the 15.00 on an engine stethoscope you will clearly hear one lifter is slapping on the valve cap!!! You cannot hear that anywhere else on the motor on the vacuum pump (no), the high fuel pressure rail and injectors(no) but you put the tip on the the intake next to the valve cove over middle cylinder you will hear a lifter that sounds like it has 200,000 miles on it! Cant express this more. If you dont have the tools to listen and know what your listening to. You won't what's going on. I truly I'm not being rude, it's just I've read so many posts on this subject and yes motors may have louder vacuum pumps, louder high pressure injectors systems. But LIFTERS HAVE A DISTINCT SOUND.... PLEASE SOMEONE SPEND THE 15.00 AND YOU CAN CLEARLY HEAR EACH OF WHAT EVERYONE IS CLAIMING BUT EACH SOUND COMES FROM A SPECIFIC POINT ON THE MOTOR. REMEMBER THIS!!!!! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. And like I always say we all learn something new everyday!!!

Many vehicles ago, I have used a poor mans stethoscope, a wooden dowel to pinpoint engine noises. You might have one of those lying around the garage.

Dude, why are you so angry???
Not everyone who hears a ticking noise has a bad lifter. The fuel pumps on the V6 are noisy, to a novice it can sound like a lifter.

Bought my 2016 v6 new and the salesman explained it to me. Disabling self cleaning happens at low idle. Anybody can hear the tapping. One guy asked if it was some sort of hybrid diesel. Service dept said it was running as designed. The owners manual is pretty useless. Seems like if Toyota came up with all these new functions, they’d be explained in the manual. Like the transmission shifting that feels defective.

I think dealers have a script to follow for a handful of 2016 complaints so they get you out of their hair. It’s almost like there is a language barrier.

That is important to note - the cleaning happens only at low idle. If you’re getting ticking noises as the engine revs up, or even if you rev it to like 100rpm above idle - something else is going on.

Mine at 38,000 has developed a cold engine tick. With all the corona virus craziness going on, i’m just going to contend with the awful alaskan dealer next winter

    Hey guys,

Been having the same issue on my 2020 sport... metallic ticking upon acceleration. I have taken my truck to 2 different dealers. I’m pretty sure our motors are pinging. The 2nd gen 4.0s had the same exact issue and there was a TSB to fix it. I think the dealer flashed the ecm and reloaded it, and the issue was resolved.

Hi guys. I brought my 2017 tacoma to service because of same noise issue. 3.5 V6 engine. I told service advisor that noise is coming from high pressure fuel pump and it needs to be replaced in accordance with SB-0016-18 under warranty until 5 years/60000 miles. Thanks God I have 50000 miles on it and bought 1 month ago. Mechanic agreed and took the truck to the shop. came back approx 1 hr later and said its not coming from HP fuel pump. They had another tacoma in the shop with exactly same problem. They opened case to Toyota-USA. And they started removing the head to reach out cam/valve/lifter mechanism and to see the cylinders as directed by Toyota-USA. Other tacoma in the shop had cylinder had replaced, because of damage from part what makes this noise. They said they would do the same and there is another SB addresses this issue and this SB is also under warranty for 5/60000. They gave me loaner car and said they will call me after its done, but it takes approx 1 week. i forgot to ask what SB was it related to noise issue.
It was chirping/tickling noise and engine was running like diesel engine.
I am aircraft mechanic and i always make the service know it when i go, so they cannot tell me BS and doesn't wanna play with me. I'll see 1 week later with what they are going to come up. I can give you more details when i get my tacoma back.

Purchased my 16’ in late 2015. It has ticked ever since new (13 miles on it). The truck now has around 160k miles on it, and it still ticks. Perhaps louder than originally, perhaps not, really hard to say. It definitely sounds like a baby diesel at idle, not something I really enjoy but it is what it is.

While I suppose it could simply be loud lifters, and it is definitely annoying, I tend to also believe the sound is “normal”. Surely if it was a bad or failed part something else would have reared it’s ugly head by now, after all these miles and all the engine hours my truck has.

I'm back after 3 years and 52k miles and it still rattles like an empty spray paint can. Coming from the passenger side on the back side of the motor..I think that's where the vacuum is? Anyone heard anything else on this?

About 42K miles on mine. Same ticking. Same MPGs. No oil consumption. I think the noise is a by-product of the Atkinson Cycle engine.

the typical tacoma tick occurs at idle only. it's definitely strange you are hearing it on acceleration too.
