Been doing a bunch of research on dual battery systems but I feel overwhelmed. I originally wanted the Genesis off-road kit but I saw many people have had issues with the oil funnel and wheel fender break from the weight and not enough space for two batteries in one spot.

I want to run my regular battery, plus a deep cycle battery near the passenger side firewall. Any recommendations?

This is the last one I was looking at, seems more expensive that what else I've seen. What's the benefit of this kit? From others? All I care about is running a fridge and other accessories from the 2nd battery and being able to jump start. Oh and obviously having the split system.

Nice looking truck. I'll keep and eye out. Also... Noticed that you had posted pics of a Joying unit. Did you swap in a different head unit?

I run all my stuff off a single 27f and keep a jump pack in the truck. Never had any issue and way cheaper. I can easily run for a couple days.

I have the JBL system and it does not work with the JBL system. So if anyone wants it for the low low price of free, they're welcome to it. I put in an Alpine Halo9 instead and am a happy camper. I was able to get the Joying unit to work and not cut out as often with the Maestro RR unit, but lost all the "cool" functionality of the canbus integration up to and including the steering wheel controls. Which does work with the Alpine unit.

I think I kept the wiring harness for the Joying unit, but it was a lot of cutting/splicing/unsplicing/cutting more/unsplicing back/forth when I was trying to figure out and resolve the sound cutting out. So if someone wants it, best bet would be to contact Joying and get a new harness. I also took the antenna connector off the Joying harness and used it for the Alpine unit. I'll give @Scoobyvroom right of first refusal.

    It’s plug and play.

I run the fridge all night and day in my truck for weeks at a time. Only running on a stock group AGM, but I also move camp every day.

so the reason i was going against the genesis off road kit is I had seen a thread where several peoples fender welds broke from the weight, and the oil funnel near the battery broke too from being hit by the battery. Is this a common issue? Has it been solved? I take my truck on some decent rocky trails so that's why I was looking for a split system.

I think I am going to go with the off grid system since thats what i was already looking at but curious of my genesis off road fears are unwarranted. seems like its better to be safe than sorry.

some people recommended running the battery in the back but it would just be inconvenient for me. Don't you have a flatbed now? I have decked drawers now and don't want to take up any space for anything else permanent like batteries.

Yep, got that, but what other accessories? A fridge is so minor of a draw second batteries are not exactly needed, if you are cognizant of charging. Hell you can get a solar panel hooked to your stock battery that will maintain a fridge longer than any dual battery setup. If it’s heavy winching duties, running power tools, trying to look like the sun in the middle of the night, heaters, campers, etc, then they absolutely make sense.

Not trying to be the nay sayer, but online communities have seemed to turned into equipment wars filled with the “starter pack” mentality.

I agree. Most people think a dual battery is required for fridges, etc but a quality single battery is more than sufficient in most instants. Especially if you aren’t parking for days at a time. I usually don’t sit for more than 12 to 36 hours which is easily doable just running a fridge and a single battery.

I do have a winch, plan on adding an ARB twin compressor, I run several dash cams in parking mode (for my youtube channel) power a tablet mounted on my dash thats hardwired in. one day eventually will get an LED light bar. Dont plan on going too crazy with the lights tho, just want a roof rack light bar eventually.

solar panels will not be possible, the roof racks i have will be for an RTT and several storage boxes.

For my next trip to moab this april it'll likely just be for the fridge, can i just swap an odyssey AGM battery with the stock setup? The stock battery is shit, I ran my fridge off of it and it can't last a night without cutting off from the low voltage setting. Also when I left it on for 2 days without driving the 2nd morning I needed a jump start.

I also wanted to be able to jump start off the 2nd battery. I have killed by battery from my dashcams before on very cold winter nights. although thats likely more because the stock battery sucks. I got a portable jump starter but it struggles on very cold mornings.

I do park for days at a time but obviously I wouldn't be running this stuff during those times. I have a daily driver car, I go sometimes 3 even 4 weeks not driving my truck sometimes. Usually when I do drive it it's just so it doesn't sit too long. But again I obviously wouldn't be running those accessories except when I'm on a trip.

Honestly I would start by replacing the stock battery with a 27F AGM. If that proves to not be enough power, then go down the dual battery route.

my stock battery would run my fridge for maybe 12 hours before shutdown. I’ve yet to kill this one.

i was gonna buy this because genesis offroad recommended it, is it overkill? Not sure how battery sizes works but it doesnt seem this one will drop right in.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008FY5UF8/?coliid=I1QHTSIL1D1YQG

My main dashcam has an auxiliary battery specifically designed for dash cams with parking mode, and would only use power from the starter battery while the engine is running, and I would be running the engine while using my winch so maybe this is the better route, at least for now until I get more accessories.

Will save me a lot of money too.

I’ve got an x2power 27F (they are rebranded North Star batteries).

It appears they are still running a 10% discount and $30 rebate on them

    https://www.batteriesplus.com/product-details/auto_light-truck/battery/x2power/sli27fagmdp

the 27F is a larger battery than the 34r with more CCA and amp hours of power. The 27f easily fits in the Tacoma and was what they previously used on the second gen v6 before switching to a 24f for the 3rd gen. So for nearly the same price as the 34r, you can get more capacity (about 30 ah) which is what it sounds like you need for your use case.

the stock battery is a 24f and a starting battery, not agm deep cycle so it doesn’t have much for usable power.

either one will be an upgrade over stock, but I’ve been very happy with mine.

battery sizes are a description of the size and post location. It’s not as easy as picking a bigger number and assuming that’s a bigger battery. The 34r is smaller physically and capacity wise than a 27f

    ADC45D54-733F-4D39-9BCA-649B3DF0B719.jpg

also if you are connecting much to the battery, the SDHQ terminals are awesome.
