High temp spray paint for exhaust?

Thoughts on spray painting exhaust? Is it worth the effort? I spray fluid film on everything else so my exhaust is really the only thing rusting.

 

what about the spray paint for wood stoves? there is one that can handle 1200 degrees

what is fluid film?

 

I've always wondered about this.

 

It’s a rust/corrosion preventative film that stays wet until you wash it off. Sprayed it everywhere under the truck giving extra attention to the frame and leaf springs. If you spray it on the exhaust, it will burn off slowly and it’s pretty stinky, but not harmful.

 

I do it with rusoleum clear high heat engine paint. Only do clear cuz i have a SS TRD Exhaust that i dont want black lol

 

You can paint your exhaust but I personally would not. Just replace it when the rust eats a hole. Painting it will increase temperature because the painted metal cannot radiate heat out as easily

 

Never heard anyone complain of this. Seems like a load of BS to me...engine paint is made more hight heat and engine parts. If it can take header heat im sure a cat back will be fine to.

 

That's fine, the heat should be going out the tailpipe not radiating all over your undercarriage.

VHT makes header paint, that's what I used on the header and exhaust in my FJ40, but it's garaged and I don't put a lot of miles on it so not sure about durability.

 

Don't need high temp for tail pipes. I did my tail pipes in regular flat black. I was after appearance not rust protection. I wanted pipes to match tips.

 

Do you have some infrared readings of painted vs unpainted you can share to demonstrate this?

Obviously same pre-reading driving conditions and point of reading on the exhaust are required.

This isn't true, and even if it were possible for rattle can paint to "suffocate" radiant heat this would actually be the preferred outcome in an exhaust situation so the heat is directed outboard and not into the bottom of your truck.

 

Thinking about doing this soon. Have some Rust-Oleum high temp black spray paint I can use

Anyone who’s done this- How’s it holding up after a few years?

 

I ended up doing it a couple years ago. I used VHT high heat. Did everything the manufacturer recommended and it still ended up beginning to peel off about a year later. I honestly wouldn’t try it again, but maybe you’ll have better luck with rustoleum. I’ll post pics today or tomorrow of the current state

thank you man! I just ran out and cut all that exhaust wrapping off my motorcycle. now my pipes can breath!!

 

The thermal cycling causes the paint to fail after a period of time.

I have never seen any last very long .

If this is something you don`t mind doing every few weeks go for it .

The stove paint works on stoves because for the most the stove stays hot through the season redo next year before start up.

 

Used Rust-Oleum high temp, the 2000F one today..
We'll see how it holds up!

 

Looking forward to a progress report in a few months.
