Trans. Output shaft seal

I've got a 2016 Tacoma with 43k miles and I'm on my second output shaft seal. Is anyone else having any issues?

 

Need a little more info. Auto, or Manual? 2wd, or 4wd?

 

howd you come to find problems with the seal?

 

Probably AT. Probably a bushing or out of round issue, pure speculation. Certainly is not a commom Tacoma issue.

 

Sorry, 2wd automatic. The ATF leaking was the giveaway that I have an issue. First seal want bad just before 42K, second seal started leaking just over 1k later.

 

so soon makes me think they did a bad job on the replacement.

 

71K on my 4WD 2016. All's dry.

This, and/or they didn't check driveshaft for any defects, which caused first failure.

 

That's where I am coming from.

 

No Nick's in the polished shaft?

 

No nicks that I could see. I just bought another seal, and will install it tonight. I'll check and see if there is anything on the driveshaft that could be snagging the seal.

 

Is this a bearing or bushing next to the seal?

 

Why don't you let Toyota fix it under warranty? US trucks have a 5yr , 60K Mile Powertrain warranty.

 

Like another said should be covered under powertrain warranty.

Question, was the new seal an OEM toyota seal? Or A/M seal?

 

I know it might sound obvious, but you're greasing the OD and ID of the seal before installing and only "pushing" on the OD of the seal to install right? Sometimes the seal can wear out the shaft, counterintuitively, grit imbeddes in the softer rubber then abraids the shaft, as long as it's still a bright polish on the shaft u should be good.

When I called the dealer, I was told thr seal was not covered under the drivetrain warranty.

 

Maybe it's not the seal and something else covered under warranty

 

Since you are doing the work yourself. When you pull the driveshaft, check the end of driveshaft for smoothness. If there is a burr or rough spot on driveshaft, where it meets the seal, it could cause a leak. Also check the race on the transmission where the seal goes into. That could have an imperfection and cause a leak.

Anywhere the seal will be touching, that metal needs to be smooth. No indentations or raised areas.
