    Evening

    1. Which fuel pump is it?
    2. What does it entail?
    3. Will it have an extended warrantee on the work/parts beyond the factory warrantee?
    4. What can the Toyota Techs fuck up while in there doing it?
    5. When, if ever, does a recall like this "time out" - can I do it in 3 years? 5 years?
    6. What percentage of pumps will actually fail?
    7. Any YouTube or How Tos on doing it yourself so I can see what the job entails?

I'm asking for two main reasons:

    1. Is it smarter to wait 3, 4, 5 years so then I get a new pump after the old one(s) have had significant use?
    2. Should I worry techs will make things worse in there? I like to do all the work myself where possible.

    Thanks in advance!

Let the dealer fix it. Can't get any worse. Most Tech's go to school (ASE, & other tech schools). The guy/girl whom built your truck in factory, may not even graduated from high school. Most are on job training.

If you do it yourself the part will not be covered, you will have to pay for it. They can't give you the part and let you install it and cover that under warranty/recall. The recall will have more info later, it may have an expiration date or it may be open indefinite. We get safety recall on some units and the expire date is 9999.
It will not be the oil change kid doing the work, that job will go to a certified tech making good money.

It makes far more sense to just take it in and have them do it. And do it ASAP as this is something that can leave you stranded.

Wait for the total details of the recall to be released. Some of you are being paranoid.

At least it's a recall unlike the third brake lamp cluster fuq. That part I will be pro-active and change out. I'm not going to wait for it to leak, so this summer out it comes.

There are more details in the NHTSA filings: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2020/RMISC-20V012-4705.pdf

It's the low pressure fuel pump in the tank, specifically the impeller in the pump can crack by absorbing fuel.

    4. The techs can fuck up anything they touch: fuel filler neck, fuel tank straps, floater assy, fuel filter, evap lines, pinched gasket... dirt on top of the tank can fall in and contaminate the fuel. But don't worry, 80% of the time you'll be fine.

    5. Recalls never expire. An outstanding recall stays on the vehicle's record permanently and can prevent title or plate transfer years from now, depending on jurisdiction.

    6. What's your time horizon? Failure rate may follow some exponential- or chi-squared distribution over time. In 50 years I'd expect ~100% of the affected pumps will fail. :p According to the DOT filing, suspect mfg date range is Aug 2018 - Jan 2019. By June 2019 Toyota was getting failure reports (and warranty returns).

    7. Replacing just the impeller in the pump isn't practical at a dealer, so the remedy will likely be pump replacement. If you want to go through the trouble of dropping the tank to replace the pump, you might as well upgrade to a higher flowrate pump from Walbro or AEM. Maybe remove the in-tank fuel filter and add an external fuel filter to make servicing easier.

I’m pretty sure Toyota won’t be happy if you try to fix the recall yourself

They won't mind. They will sell him the fuel pump and the work will not be recorded as complete, so if something bad happened later on to his truck that could be traced back to the fuel pump, it will show the recall was never completed. They can't file it if the customer does the work themselves.

Lol they will know the pump was not original. They know every part and what the truck started with.
OP, take it in, get it fixed and move on with life. Don't worry until you need to worry.

Thanks all, would it be wise to change out the fuel filter while they are "all up in there" as I think it's inside the tank?

Jesus christ. It is a fuel pump. It isnt rocket science to replace. It failing means your truck wont run until it is replaced. It isnt a big deal. Get the recall notice in the mail. Call your dealer to schedule replacement. Go in and get it replaced and go on with your lives. Is this a BMW forum? :duh:

It's all one unit, filter and pump.
