CA smog doesn't even give a rip if your brakes don't work. All they care about is having the correct stickers and the sniff nest, and if you paid your fee.

That's one thing I've thought was kinda funny, how we have strict emissions testing but when it comes to vehicle safety they could care less. I would be more pro-safety checks than smog checks, cause there are some janky ass cars on our roads out here

    Or fired.

Thankfully my line of work doesnt require me to be an expert machinist. If we need something done super precise, it goes to our head machinist.

The filler he used costs $200 for a small cup.

I wish he had a safety inspection for brakes and shit.. it’s ridiculous how many cars with baby seats in the back come in with bald tires and a brake pedal that goes to the floor

I mean maybe if you did it a few times haha. We have a millwright on staff for a reason. Most of our stuff gets used hard because we're a high volume job shop. Things get setup and torn down a few times every day and those setups are tested so shit does get hurt from time to time. It's expected you'll break something now and again.

Why do you need pads when the caliper piston works just as well?

It’s scary how many times I’ve had people decline brakes because “it still stops”

Meanwhile I’m staring at no brake pad

I definitely see a need to keep janky ass shit boxes off the road. You know, the ones that burn more oil than gas. But I see plenty of those still on the road, too. Usually with a 2007 registration sticker...

When my bro in laws caliper seized, it got down to metal on metal. Sounded and felt like someone was using an angle grinder on the floorpan whenever you braked. Glad he asked me to fix it pretty much as soon as it started grinding. The squealer wasnt there (cheapo pads) otherwise he wouldve noticed sooner.

Even the $10 pads off rockauto will get people 15-20k miles. People are so freakin stupid if they deny a service that involves their safety and the safety of others. Im glad NC inspects this stuff.

I need to do em on the Tacoma pretty bad I think. They're just not very good and they vibrate. I was going to take it all off and throw it out, calipers, hoses, pads, rotors, shoes, wheel cylinders, drums, all said and done it's still under $250 to do it all with good parts.

Yup. Eric O on the South Main Auto Channel on Youtube says pretty much the same thing. Fix the radio or AC before fixing the actually necessary items.

I think I was in around $200 for new rotors, good pads, caliper pins/springs, fluid, and caliper paint.

Still didnt get rid of the vibration I get when braking hard from high speed. Steering wheel doesnt shake so I think the drums need turned.
