Hey Sacramento people, I'm potentially being offered a job in the area and need to do some cost of living calculations. I really dont want to move to CA but being a few hours from the Rubicon and bunch of other wheeling I may be able to suck it up a bit if the price is right. What's some places to look at, areas to a avoid? Towns around Sacramento to look at that may be affordable? Would be looking at a single family house, 3 car garage, no kids and dont plan on having any. Place of employment is on the NW side and just outside the city.

All vehicles are Illinois emission compliant. My tacoma is hacked up and solid axle swapped on 37s but still "street legal" here, what do I need to look at vehicle law wise to make sure it complies? I'm assuming mudflaps and tires not sticking 10ft outside the fender right?

I can't get into that conversation here (against the rules), sorry.

EDIT: If you wait a bit, I know of a house that's going on the market...
Just under 3 acres, ~2600 sq/ft house, 3bed 3.5bath plus den, attached 2-car garage and a detached ~800 sq/ft shop with a standard and rv-sized garage door in Placer County.

I live in Woodland. Its about 15-20 minutes from the NW side. Great small town. Probably a bit more expensive than Sac for housing, but it is a great small town. Nothing is really affordable though... Yuba city might be cheap if you want to live a bit away.

Fucking homeless. I avoid the north end of town. If there was a better school closer to the base, I would move.

There’s no way Woodland is more expensive than Sacramento, right?

It is. Just can't swing the extra 20-30 minute drive to the base. The reason it's expensive is the Davis peeps that keep moving up this way.

Schools suck compared to what he's in. And Vacaville Christian is 5k more a year than Woodland Christian is...

I moved here from Highwood, IL, although I also did grad school out here so knew what I was getting into.
Woodland is nice, and Dixon is less expensive on this side of Sacramento. I am in Davis and wouldn’t recommend due to cost of housing, although it does have great schools. If you are off of I-80, then commuting to Sacramento from this side can be a real nightmare. Woodland may be better. I don’t have anything to say about other parts of Sacramento, though, as I don’t know it so well. I do know that rush hour is going to be rough in certain spots along both I-80 and US-50. But if place of employment is NW side, then maybe Woodland would work well. There are some rough spots in Rio Linda and such, and I will defer to other TWers to comment on that. I have been isolated and only have lived in Davis, and it keeps getting more expensive here.
If you passed smog in Illinois, you are likely to be fine here (we were). But I cannot comment on compliance for your truck. I have a newer one (Turd Gen!) and it’s not too augmented...yet.
Have you had a long commute in Bolingbrook? The commute time around here is likely no different (or worse) than Chicago traffic, especially if you were going in towards the city for your job. I know one crazy person that commutes from Evanston to Morton Arboretum daily...but she’s crazy. And my sister just moved out of Oak Park, IL, down to Indiana. She works more from home but her hubby still works in Downtown Chicago. They had to get away from the taxes.
