Hello Tacoma world I have a road trip planned in March to Lake Tahoe . I couldn’t really find a straight answer my Tacoma has falken wildpeaks and I noticed they have the snowflake stamped on the sidewall. Am I required to have chains because I’m 2wd or am I in the clear because of the snow rating? Never really drive In the snow sorry.

All two wheel drive vehicles must have chains in their possession. Or on their truck if the hazard has been implemented. All 4x4 with snow tires must have chains in their vehicles to proceed from any checkpoint.

Buy chains as far away as you can. The closer you get the more they cost.

This is the report on I80 right now:

    I-80:

"IS CLOSED EASTBOUND TO ALL TRACTOR-SEMITRAILER COMBINATIONS AT APPLEGATE (PLACER CO) - DUE TO TRACTION CONCERNS - ALL TRACTOR-SEMITRAILER COMBINATIONS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE"

"EASTBOUND TRAFFIC IS BEING HELD AT COLFAX (PLACER CO) - DUE TO MULTIPLE SPIN-OUTS"

"CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM COLFAX (PLACER CO) TO THE NEVADA STATE LINE"

"EASTBOUND TRUCKS ARE BEING SCREENED AT APPLEGATE (PLACER CO) - DRIVERS MUST HAVE MAXIMUM CHAINS IN THEIR POSSESSION IN ORDER TO PROCEED - PERMIT LOADS ARE PROHIBITED

Usually you must be AWD or 4WD with snow tires. Otherwise you need to carry chains with you or you may get turned around if conditions get bad enough that they set up checkpoints to make sure your vehicle is capable/safe. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to bring a shovel, it helps to be able to dig yourself out after parking as well as throwing snow in the back for weight if you don't have cargo back there. The back end of these trucks slide around like a soaped up kid on a slip-n-slide, or at least mine does.

Evaluate 1 week before. In all likelihood the roads will be clear in March. But
    late season storms do happen.

if the weather looks concerning the week before then order Z chains on Amazon. You just need a set for the drive wheels.

You'll need a set for the rear only. They come in a pair per set.

One can never have too many light bars.
You'll need chains on your back wheels. March is very much the snow season. Buy them before you go up there or else you'll have to pay a huge premium. Make sure you have the rubber tighteners for the chains too. Tahoe snow is no joke it can dump over a foot an hour even in late april.

Current as of 2 hours ago past dutch flat. Real icy on the highway in spots.
Chain control wasn't playing around tonight. Usually just get a thumbs up and a wave by but they checked tires and 4x4 this time. 4x4 With chains? never heard of that one tbh.
I run Wildpeaks myself but went into 4hi not too far past chain control. 2-Wheel got sketchy quick. Winter can get wild in march. Grab a set of chains and youll be good.

When I lived in the Rocky Mountains I had a 54 Willys 4x4 with Armstrong Norseman snow tires and regularly ran chains in all four wheels. If you drive in the mountains during winter with a 2WD, especially a pickup truck, buy chains and make sure you are able to install them in the middle of a freezing blizzard, which is usually when you use them. Throw a couple 50 lb sandbags in the back.
