I thought the Tacoma’s were made in Mexico already? Besides the Pro’s.

If the Tacoma has a 5 at the beginning of the VIN is from Texas and if it has a 3 its from Mexico

Tacomas are made in TJ as well as in Texas currently, but now ALL production is being moved to Mexico. It will remain in the TJ plant and they have a new plant in mainland Mexico as well now.

Bound to be more to the story.

They’re investing almost $1B into San Antonio and another new plant in Cibolo, with construction on both completing in 2021. The Cibolo plant will be cranking out Aisin transmissions, which will probably offset the Mexico Tariffs. Should be interesting.

I saw this in the opening too. Seems temporary.

DETROIT – Toyota Motor will shift all production of the Tacoma midsize pickup from Texas to Mexico as it restructures its North American footprint and invests $13 billion in U.S. manufacturing operations through next year.

Article mentions that Toyota does it to build cars on unified platforms together, to improve efficiency and cut costs.

Could that mean when they start making Tundra on a new platform in Texas they will return Tacoma to Texas as well just because they are going to share platforms?

These supply chain guys are wicked smart. They’re constantly looking at things and finding efficiencies. Several years ago, the same thing happened with a local tech company I was working for. Just by adjusting the flow of materials and locations of factories, they saved about $1B in costs.

NUMMI production stopped in 2010, Tesla owns that plant now.

Makes sense, Tundras and Sequoias in TX, Tacomas in Baja, especially as the new 2022 Tundra will require retooling at the plant.
