Tires-- I Know--I Know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a search but really didn't find the answer to my question which is--------- My stock tires suck (you all know that) (2009 access cab 4x4) I don't do any Off Road but I do drive the truck in the fields every so often and with winter coming I would like something a little (a little more aggressive) I don't want all out "off Road" but something that will be OK for the highway and work well in the field. also do ya think I could sell the stock tires? they only have 7k on them. I would really appreciate any ideas, the dealer has a special on now where if you purchase 3 tires the 4th is only a buck, but I am not sure just what they sell, Thanks Doc

 

trd offroad? firestone destination is a good tire......not overly aggressive

 

what they sell? look at your local craigslist prices...

what tire to go with? probably an AT tire, which one? take a pick lol there's lots to choose from, read the wheels/tires threads/reviews in the wheels/tires forum, also tirerack reviews then you can make up your own mind.

 

you could sell the tires, might be good to keep them around as a backup pair. i'd look into a decent all-terrain tire, nothin full-blown, just something with some decent tread

I traded in my OEM BFGs and went to Michelin LTX AT2s and love them. Traded tires at 12,500 miles and Discount Tire gave me $200.00 trade in for the old BFGs.

Two brands that were good for me on my 2005 were: TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T and COOPER DISCOVERER ATR fair price, quiet, worked fine off road about 40,000 miles.

 

No tire is bullet proof... this was a new Michelin LTX that got the sidewll ripped about 2 miles off the highway on our Mision Santa Maria run, last May. The driver is a long time off roader, he did have the tires deflated... perhaps too much? This was the only damaged tire of the 6 vehicles.

 

I just got rid of my stock Dunlops for some Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs. I have been driving a lot on them the last few days and love them so far. The are extremely smooth and give me a quiet ride. I also upgraded to 265/75/16s.

 

Sorry for the opinionated post, but I have NEVER had good luck with Firestone/Bridgestone... They always wore out prematurely; and when I say that, I mean they were finished WAY sooner than any other brand I have ever used (with identical driving habits).

 

Yokahama Geolander ATS

 

I've got the Cooper ATR's on my 2007 DBSB and am very happy with them. If you want something a little less aggressive, they make an M+S Discoverer and an HTR tire also. The HTR is obviously a pavement oriented tire but still does very well in the winter.

you could also try those new Falken Wildpeak A/T's. a guy in another thread just bought them and he likes them.

 

Agree with the Durtracs.
already have 1 winter with these and they were outstanding.
They were designed as a work truck tire,
hense- road travel, mud, snow etc.

 

I've got about 90,000 highway miles on my Yokohama Geolander HT/S G-051's, have no complaints, good tires

 

My vote is for the Yokohama Geolander A/T-S. Had them on my last truck (F150 supercrew) for about 4 years. Great highway tire. Quiet on road, handles excellent in wet and black ice. Very good in light snow. Light off roading, trails and light mud handles great.
Prices are pretty reasonable through Tire Rack and many places such as Discount Tire will price match. If there is a down side it would be the tread life. While I had about 25,000 miles on mine and probably had another 10,000 + miles of useful treadlife.
Well, they get my vote for price, and useful on/off road handling.

I sold my rugged fails after the first 300 miles (and one snow storm) and got Pirelli Scorpion ATRs (Blackwall) from tire rack. I think they are great for my intents and purposes which is highway and light off road. My only beef with them is they keep turning brown and I need to scrub 'em with comet every so often.

 

You didn't say what tire you have so I'm assuming they are the Dunlop AT-20. Personally if your not into serious off roading I would keep them. I like mine and are fine for most conditions. If you want something a little more aggresive the Brigstone Revos are good, but they are much louder. If you want more traction your going to have to sacrifice comfort and gas mileage too.

 

i know i lot of people are down on the BFG AT's but i really have stood by this tire, that said you can get a bad set buy them from a reputable dealer and if anything is wrong they will replace them, i expect to get 90000 from this set im at about 35000 they look great at least 2/3 tread and ride nice, i run a good bit of air in them about 35lbs or more took 2 ballances at Sams with idiots to prove that they cant do it took it to toyota and they ride like glass. no show in this part of the country but i hear they do fairly well in it. good luck with it all.

 

I'm riding on BFG AT's. A fairly heavy tire in comparison to stock. So far with about 5000 miles on the tire they are OK. I did lose a bit over 1 mpg in town. They aren't overly noisy but definitely more so than stock. Price wise though, they are not cheap. They are a fairly hard compound and will last a long time. With the harder compound I have seen some traction issues in wet conditions on road.
I still stand by the Yokohama Geolander AT/S I had on my last rig. Wish I woulda spent less money and went to them when I replaced the stock ones.
