Just looking for a way to always have it on. My friend owns a 1st gen and he can turn it on and always start the truck without pressing the clutch. Can I jump a sensor or is it impossible on the 3rd gen? Thanks in advance I couldn't find anything on this for the newer generation

It's a switch, you can just jumper the switch. It's really not intended for that purpose though. It's really for hill starts and use in 4Lo

    From the owner's manual:

    Clutch start cancel switch

The switch allows the vehicle to be driven out of difficult situations by cranking the engine with the clutch engaged.

Never use the switch for normal engine starting.

Be sure to follow the starting procedure. (P. 201)

As of now I use the switch to turn the truck on and let it warm up while I load my kid or whatever I am doing. Is this bad practice?

I am super new to the truck world so sorry if I sound ignorant.

You'd have to remove the clutch switch and leave it hanging, might cause a code if the truck doesn't see the clutch in its resting position. The sensor is a bear to get to.

    Short answer is no.

It isn't exactly bad practice, but I wouldn't get into the habit of it. As long as you aren't using it to regularly start the truck and get it rolling while it's in gear, it's just an exercise in futility and causes bad muscle memory. This is really what it's intended for:

Ironically, if you use it frequently as intended, it'l wreak havoc on your thrust bearings.

Thank you for the information. One point I agree with is bad muscle memory that's a great reason I didn't think much about.

They should change the name to Oh Sh*t I'm stuck button if it shouldn't be used frequently. I guess the vast majority will never use it and it's nice to have.

Just push the clutch with your hand and turn the key. Problem solved. Leave in neutral and use e brake. Good to go

The way I've seen it used is you turn the key to accessory, push the clutch cancel button, truck is in neutral, foot on brake, starts right up.

    Is that damaging?

From the factory, I have had ignitions that don't depend on clutch position in a car (saab 9-3) and a bike (Ural GearUp), and I modified by other bike (Ducati ST4) to be the same. It is just a wonderful thing that comes in handy.

The CSC switch is an okay middle ground, but like you, I would like to have the ignition not be dependent on the clutch.

I never imagined ever applying what was shown in this video to real life. That’s gotta be hard on the starter/flywheel.

I always though it was a convenience thing where you could start the engine without jumping in the seat.

Tacoma's have had this feature since the 90's that I can remember, never recall seeing anything on any failures.

I don't think this is what he's talking about. I believe he means he doesn't want to have to get in and push the clutch in to start it in neutral, not that he wants to start it in gear as with the clutch start cancel button.

It's literally just a safety switch override if used in the manner you're talking about. Watch the video I posted above. That isn't the switch's primary function, but I don't see it hurting anything (just a bad habit IMO).

Oh I see, so he's just parking it in neutral and pressing the button. Yeah I don't see that being a problem either, other than I wouldn't want to park in neutral on an incline in case of an e brake failure.
