3rd Gen Reliability experience from owners so far

Trying to get he dialed in to perfection. Diamondback cover,ovtune,pro grille,led bar, about to buy the dmm.

 

Well I have had my 2016 Trd Off-road M/T since Feb 16, and I've put on 140,000 miles so far and I have 0 warranty but I haven't had one single issue and I abuse the hell out of my truck. She's runs as good as the day I bought her, I have to say she is as capable off-road as my 70 FJ40 and my 80's Toyota pickup. And I've never had any tsb's, I've never gone back to the dealership other to buy some parts. I love my 16, and I will never sell it, it is the perfect midsize 4x4 out there. Good luck bud! It all depends on what you plan to use the truck for.

 

I should add, my truck has had exactly 0 recalls. None.

 

I believe these trucks will see 300k easily.

 

I have had a 2019 Tacoma SR Access Cab Long Bed V6 4x4 since Nov. 2018. I’ve had some bad experiences with my truck but with that being said if I had no issues I’m sure I would love the truck and many have no issues. I only have 15k miles.

1.) Rear Diff Replacement at 963 miles(heard the howl).

2.) Since rear diff replacement it now pops/clicks and I was told this is a “characteristic” of the vehicle now.

3.) Stumbling Transmission(No Fix, TSB supposedly does not apply to my vin).

4.) “Broken” Passenger Seat(squeaks like crazy) was told this is also a characteristic of the vehicle.

4.) Chattering Leaf Springs(Tech pointed this out, then Service manager said a few days later the tech said he “thought” he heard that, no fix and doesn’t bother me as I don’t know what it sounds like).

5.) Check Engine Light and Low Oil Pressure Light(Towed to dealer, they found no issues and lights were gone).

6.) Toyota Safety Sense Radar Sensor Recall.

7.) After Recall Toyota Safety Sense system turns itself off and back on with the message “Forward Facing Camera Unavailable” (no fix and can find no issue).

8.) Truck is now under the newest recall of Toyota with the “low pressure fuel pump possibly failing at high speeds that currently has no remedy”. So I’m still waiting on that.

 

2017. Three years, 20k miles. One time fail to start. Battery replaced.

Rear 3rd replaced (slight weeping, dealership somehow locked up locker on test drive, decided 3rd needed replaced. )

Have a mystery rattle in the rear somewhere when making right turns. Spent hours trying to locate, no luck. Next up, investigate by GoPro.

Other than that, so far solid. Other than the mystery rattle in the rear end area, truck doesn't make a peep. Which is one main reason I love and buy Toyotas. Put together well and quiet. Fantastic daily driver. Enjoy it every time I get behind the wheel.

Having said that, this truck has not been tested yet, and I am not yet anywhere near ready to put it in the same class as my Gen1. Had it out for two weeks of moderate off roading during a hunt (some tough terrain, but a "dry" trip with no rain, mud, or snow, and certainly didn't push the truck the way I used the Gen1). Then a medical issue, and haven't been back out in over 2 years.

I've seen enough to know it is very capable. The reliable and tough tags are yet to be determined.

 

Reliable yes. But the amount of electronics is getting ridiculous. Learning tranny was finicky for the first 5k, bsm goes out with snow or mud up in the bumper and takes a week of driving around to recalibrate itself. Bluetooth being a PIA and constantly restarting the head unit.

all those things are fixed and no real problem, more annoying. The actual truck, it’s a yota. And it’s built like a yota. No issues there.

 

Thanks for the post man. How long did the original clutch last for you? And did you replace yourself or take it to shop?

 

The failure that you describe is in a "safety system" I think all manufacturers MUST warranty (by law) these systems for either 60K or 100K? This is a fact some dealers don't like to share.

 

Dealer was able to clear the issue, the Yaw rate sensor and zero point calibration were out of sync. The problem returned, and all of the hardware and system and cables checked good. Then we found the problem, I was using a T-Mobile module that plugs into the DCS2. It started going bad, and was messing up the truck. NO PROBLEM WITH THE TACO - EVERYTHING WAS A T-MOBILE CAUSED ISSUE, with their module. I have unlimited data on my plan, so don't need the wifi hotspot.

 

Same, Same. Not a single problem. Solid as a rock. Runs flawlessly. I use premium fuel though.

 

So far my 2020 after 7 months has been solid no issues except a dirty passenger door switch that was erratic from the get-go.
I tried premium gas, and got worse performance and over a mpg less. This truck runs very good on e10 87.

 

2016 Sport, Manual Trans.
Issues:
Random head unit shut down (Dealership update fixed)
Squeaky Clutch, not fixed by TSB because outside of 3 yr/60, 000 km warranty. I shoot with lube once or twice a year., and it goes away.
Wind noise from door seals in windy conditions (somewhat resolved by stuffing in clear tubing in between seals)
Driver side seat heater not working, (researching now on TW, white thing under my seat appears to be in good condition)
No other problems.

 

19 sport 4x4 mt , 23 k miles flawless .

 

16 TRD Sport...lots of issues, although to be fair, it was one of the first off the line as it was bought Dec. 2015. 50K km. BSM died for good after a few trips to the dealer, instrument cluster had to be replaced due to avg. fuel consumption kept zeroing out, rear brake issues, random check engine light with codes dealership can't nail down the cause of, rattling dash, squeaking leaf springs and a few other little issues that I've never experienced with any other Toyota we've owned (and its a lot - our family is strictly Toyota - well over 20 vehicles over the past 15 years.) Trading in for a '21 shortly.

 

Absolute perfection with my 2020.

 

25000 plus of flawless miles on my 18 pro. Don’t miss my 2nd gen one bit!

 

Besides my squeaky ass clutch pedal .. it’s been great .

 

2017 with 25k miles, it’s been great so far. Only issues I’ve encountered were squeaky leaf springs which was fixed from the tsb and I had the blower motor replaced. My father has a 2017 also with 70k and he has had 0 issues, his truck has only been to the dealer for service and that’s it.

 

My 2019 SR5 has been excellent from day one. 11,200 miles in a year with no issues. V6 AT long bed 2 WD.
My daily driver hauls trash or dogs or groceries. Id buy another without hesitation.
