Excellent suggestion on the extended warranty. When I take the truck back for the 1000 mile follow up I will definitely insist on the warranty.
There was a HUGE mess under the truck when it came to a stop on the side of the road. The dealership steam cleaned under the truck to clean up all the oil that sprayed the underside. It smelled SO bad when I was driving it, I thought it was the semi in front of me.
The service manager at the dealership admitted it was an error of the mechanics for not following up after the service job. He showed be the part, now I am not a mechanic so I really do not know what I was looking at. He showed me the cylinder, which he said holds the oil in the truck, and it had a 2" flat side, which he said was due to either a bad O-ring or the cylinder not screwed in properly. Nevertheless, he admitted that it was their fault. He is emailing me with all the details. I am disappointed in that I have not received an email as of right now.
    What a mess!

Dry and without lube. That is what the dealer is doing to you.

No code is going to set, especially that fast, when you have damaged bearings, piston rings and cylinders. They owe you a new engine or a tear down, complete inspection, and long term warranty on the engine.

I'd push it up the Toyota chain before the dealer conveniently ''forgets all about it.

Next time run that son of a bitch till it is locked up tighter than a tick. That way they have no option but to give you a new engine, which is what they SHOULD be giving you this time.....

That’s what I’m understanding. Sounds like they didn’t put that o ring onto it in the right groove and the oil pressure was enough to shoot nice hot oil out past the threads on the filter housing

Over my 40+ years of lubricants, about 1 time a year I hear, see, read about a shop at any given level forgetting to completely refill. Point is, it happens. Dealer owes you a new engine or some kind of rock solid guarantee to replace your engine.

    It's Jan 18th. Wow.

If they had forgotten to put oil back in it the OP would have had some idea when they left the dealer.

I doubt they forgot to fill it, but also a "bad O ring" is doubtful too... I suspect someone at the dealer missed one vitally important step.

@Brenda Wirick I’d recommend going back to the dealerships service department and calmly state that you don’t feel confident with having ran an engine with no oil and the potential damage to the cylinders, bearings and internal components. That you’re not comfortable with their course of action.

If I were in your shoes I wouldn’t settle for anything less than a new engine. Period

No way a dealer gives anyone a new engine for this without a lawyer. We're talking about $5k easy for the work. I don't care how insistent you all think you'd be. Only way this is resolved is through TMS which is the way she should go at this point. Get names of all people involved and start making phone calls to TMS.

Push for extended warranty. Everyone f's up sometimes and there are consequences. Make them give you a warranty.
With that said, you should have learned a lesson as well. When you have work done like oil change or tires changed, visually inspect the work. In this case a quick look underneath at the ground would have saved you a lot of grief. Good luck.

Not sure if you can afford it but I would want to trade it in to them on a new one at a great deal . That truck would make me uneasy all the time .

In big, and bold letters, please let everybody on here know which dealership did this to you. They owe you an engine of equal quality and mileage after what you just described.

Big and bold letters, please. And, casually mention you asked for help in an online forum and mentioned their name when you speak with them again.

Lifetime warranty or new engine. If not, sue for damages and keep the truck. The wear on a motor that is run without oil can be detrimental to the longevity of the engine. I can guarantee there is some scoring of the piston walls and a drop in compression.

A couple of months ago I got 4 new tires. When I got my truck home I jacked it up and loosened all the lug nuts, tighten them with a torque wrench and rechecked them myself after 100 miles. I don't trust anyone touching my truck.
