Had my 18 TRO OR stolen from the driveway. They amified the signal from our keyfobs and started the truck. From there, they reporgram and drive off with it!

It's a major theft ring happening in Ontario and Quebec.

You absolutely need to protect your keyfobs in a faraday pouch or metal box.

I'm sorry to hear the deadbeats stole your truck!
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but at a certain point, they can, and will, steal anything if they want it. They get snatched by tow trucks every night too.

I’m not terribly upset that my 10-year old base model has a good old ignition key, and no keyless entry, now!

That's shitty that your vehicle was stolen, but do you really know that it was started by "amplifying" your key fob's signal?

That sounds like some space age shit for car thieves... and what are they reprogramming to eventually drive off? I'm so confused

Yeah, sounds a little fishy to me too, but anything is possible.

Its a real thing. They use a signal booster to capture the fob signal, then they have a reprogrammer tool to make a copy on a blank fob or chip.

That sucks, man. I'm sorry to hear that.

If you can get close enough to read the proximity sensor, you can clone a key from a distance. I doubt the amplifying principle, but it's semantics. It's doable, just like someone can unlock smart home doors, deactivate alarm systems, and change thermostat settings using lasers.

    It's complicated.
This sounds like a "relay attack" which typically uses a frequency receiver and re-transmitter.

The person with the receiver walks around the outside of your home, while the person with the relay device stands next to the vehicle. The typical keyless entry key fob is always transmitting, looking for the handshake from the vehicle's keyless entry system. The relay attack basically retransmitts the frequencies it receives, to the device next to the vehicle--the vehicle receives the frequency as though the fob is next to it.

In broad strokes, that's how it works.

Those are garbage, as are the ones made by Ticonn; I've bought the pouches from both companies, and they've stopped working after a few weeks. The liner is very thin, and breaks down quickly.

I've replaced them with the Silent Pocket faraday pouches, and constantly test whether they continue to work. 6 months later, they still work, as advertised.

Sounds like the faraday or makeshift tin didn’t work.

“Goulis said after his last theft, Lexus told him to use a Faraday shield, which is an enclosure used to block electronic signals. He said he was also told to move his keys away from the front door.

In response, he moved his keys toward the back of the house and away from his vehicle, and used a Christmas cookie tin as a makeshift Faraday box.

Clearly, that didn't do the trick. Now, he and his wife are constantly feeling a little wary, he said.”

I've tried all of those tricks; the cookie tin, the metal drink shaker with a tight lid, an altoids tin inside another metal tin, etc.

Putting the fob inside the microwave or the fridge works (but the fobs don't live long after being in high moisture environments.)

If they steal mine, they will go 2 blocks and abandon it. It hesitates when you stomp on the pedal, the tranny hunts gears, they will put it in 4wd while trying to adjust the temperature, the heated seats will catch on fire, they won’t be able to see out of the back window because the headrests are too big, it has a nonfunctional hood scoop, a third brake light that can leak, a rear differential that does leak and whine, a rear view mirror that blocks their view, seats that are made for little people, a tranny that’s 1 quart low from the factory, dry u joints and the tires rub. Who the hell would want to steal that?
