Prior to going back to the dealer take a sample of the motor oil and send it to Blackstone Laboratory for analysis. Give them the explanation of what happened pending their opinion may put you in a better position to negotiate whatever remedy is due you.

    Working on them
After reading this entire thread and that there was a large amount of oil under the truck I have a few comments to make about this 1st is the oil loss for that amount of oil the newbie service tech kid probably missed the old "O Ring" stuck on the filter housing so ended up with double flat O rings that will hold oil pressure until they get hot then out gushes all the oil.

2nd thing is if you heard loud "knocking and Clicking" that engine life has been severely compromised and it life expectancy is over like we are talking important bearings are damaged, piston rings may have scored the cylinder walls that kind of damage will result in oil burning that can lead to an host of other problems like destroying the catalysis converter and Fail of state emission test..... and 1000's of dollars in cost. As one of the Post here stated Look for a Lawyer that will simply write a Letter first. Explain to the Lawyer everything and that you would like to do it in progressive steps.

That Dealership service manager is attempting to brush you off when they know darn well that the damage is done and can be severe.

Auto Engines are not designed (I have not seen any yet) to run without Oil so Basically That Truck should have a full Short block <--- should said long block replacement done at a Dealership of Your choice I would not trust the place that messed up not because I don't think that they can't do the work properly I would be more worried about getting cheap shots from there.

Again this is My opinion based on working on Toyota Engines and drive trains, Benz Diesel Engines and Hydraulic systems and have seen what oil starvation does to Engines even if it is brief.

Edit ... one of our sharp readers caught this ... I said Short block when I mean Long Block (short block is no heads)

This- I wouldn’t wait until the 1k mark to come back. They are hoping you don’t know any better and that they can skate on this screw up

I had an old Jeep Cherokee that the plug just plain blew out on and dumped 5qts fairly quickly.

    Who knows?
But you're right... carelessness was involved.

I would way way rather have a 200k or lifetime warranty on an engine that ran dry for a few minutes than have an engine installed by a dealership. I'd put money the engine is fine and will run 300k miles no problem. Tolerances on modern engines are insanely tight, you're not gonna score cylinder walls on a 30k mile engine driving it with no oil for a couple minutes. Plus there was probably still oil coating most parts even if it was "dry"

We've established dealerships can't even change oil right, but you want them to replace an entire engine??

Personally I'd push for their platinum whatever warranty for 100k and lifetime on the engine and call it a win.

This ^^^^^^^^^X2^^^^^^^^^^^ the damage that has been done to this engine can NOT be undone. the least Toyota needs to do in this situation is provide you a Lifetime Warranty on this Engine and include free oil changes until it fails. Just my .02

Sounds like the oil filter was double gasketed...or the oil plug fell out

I wished I asked for lifetime warranty on my accord tranny when tranny fluid leaked out.

I was a rook back then.

Hopefully they did not add oil to tranny.

I retract my above statement after reading the later post about the oilshitski all over underneath. Sounds like filter housing plug, no?

Open a case with Toyota, contact the free Attorney referral service in your area (there is one)there are lawyers who specialize in this kind of work who will take a case like this on a contingency basis (no cost to you) and whatever you do, don't sign anything the dealer presents to you, if its not exactly what you want. and you have reviewed all your legal options.once you do, you are stuck right there. signing means you have accepted their repair. and they are done with you.
    Good Luck

They owe you a new engine or truck. A truck would be easier. But don’t settle for less than an engine. I hope you get an admission in writing.

Contact the DSM...warranty and free oil changes till 100k.
But I wouldn’t think it would be hurt....it takes a lot more than no oil to blow up a Toyota

I bet the motor is fine.....

But if this happened to me, I'd drive it 60k and trade her in as long as it didn't give me issues beforehand

Not pistons, but rings. Real damage will be the rod bearings, and or crankshaft.

Brenda in case you end up with a new truck feel free to post the vin of your old truck here on this forum so nobody will end up buying it. I have seen it too many times Dealers had to buy back a car under the lemon law run it thru the detail shop and dropped it in the used car lot without performing any work on. Kinda like change the oil/filter and drop it in the used car lot.
