Approaching 15k and there has been no noticable difference.

 

Bought the Ultraterrains today. 265/75/16.
Only put about 50 miles on them, highway and city mix. MPG seems to have remained just about the same so far. Coming from the stock Kevlars on my ‘17 dcsb TRD OR, these new tires are unbelievably quiet. Can’t wait to try them in snow, mud, rain, etc...

 

I got the 265 / 75 / 16 SL on my stock 2014 TRD OR right before Thanksgiving. Have just over 4k miles on it now. Love them off road, hate it on mud. Anyone aired down these yet?

 

Im looking at this tire - I have 43K on the tires that came on my truck (GY Kevlar). I am planning on going with the stock size - don't see a reason to go taller (assume it would impact speedometer too). I obviously drive a lot as I bought the truck new last Jan (Jan 19). If you got the tires - stock size - I'd be interested in your thoughts (MPG change?). Thanks

 

I'll reply even though mine are an inch taller than stock (265/75-16 vs 265/70-16). Speedometer readings on most Tacomas, including mine, are incorrect with stock height tires. It reads a few mph faster than you are actually going. Installing tires that are 1" taller will result in a correct speedo reading. Just throwing this out there because you mentioned speedometer would be impacted.

As to the tires, I still love mine. As I said back in post #416, they are excellent in snow, if that matters to you. Ride is very very good, noise is minimal, but handling could be a bit better (they are not as crisp & responsive as my old Michelins). No noticeable change in fuel mileage.

As quickly as you rack up the miles, I would be looking at Michelins. Where & how you drive will influence which Michelins, but consider this: They may cost more than cheaper brands, but usually have competitive pricing when compared to other premium tires. And they will usually outlast most other tires, often by a significant margin....... thus making them cheaper in the long run than just about anything else. Over the years I have owned several sets, on different vehicles, and can't recall any complaints or disappointments.

 

Thanks- I’ve got Michelin’s on a couple of our cars - my wife’s always had them. I own a horse farm (on a river ( so I’m in the mud daily. I may just put on another set of what we’re on the truck - the dealership called and said they’d put a set of (take offs) for 560 (with free replacement for the year). They told me 625-630 a few days ago. I’m looking at a Land Cruiser for my wife...maybe they are just being nice. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to help.

 

How are these on the trails? 2 ply kinda scares me. Considering these or Cooper AT3 SL or At3 LT.

 

I just did this. The E-rated KO2 made my car feel like a boat. The SL ultraterrains brought it back to normal. I have OVtune with a 91 octane tune though.

I got the Ultra Terrains in 265/75R16 for my TRD OR in September and I absolutely love them. I've taken them through sand, mud, rock, still waiting on snow. I had a buddy in El Paso TX with a TRD OR running KO2s, long story short we both went through mud and he was losing traction a little but I had no loss in traction. I took the truck up a mountain a few days ago and had to climb over a rock and the tires grabbed it and made it super easy. Unfortunately I rarely take pictures of the actual "fun"

 

So both the UT in SL and E have the 2-ply sidewalls?

The difference in weight is between the 4-ply vs 10-ply tread area only?

 

I haven't seen the sidewall specs but if they are both 2-ply, safe to assume the E-rated tires use a heavier cord in their construction. Possibly thicker sidewall rubber too. There's a 2/32" difference in tread depth (16/32 vs 18/32) but that alone won't account for the 11-pound difference in weight.

 

If you feel the inside of the tire the sidewall is pretty thick near the bead but thins out as you move closer to the tread and is IMO pretty thin right as you get to the sidewall armor. This is worriesome because when you air down this is exactly the area that comes in direct contact with the ground, rocks, sticks etc. This would not be a suitable tire for serious off-road adventures IMO.

Even at 15psi lots of unexpected sidewall flex can happen which puts your sidewall in direct contact with bad stuff. This is an off camber rock. Thankfully it's not jagged. Wildpeak AT3W 285/70/17E. Stuff like this is why I swapped out the Wildpeaks for 3ply sidewall Patagonias.

 

Now I've had them in heavy rain, snow and ice here in New Mexico for nearly a year, and they are certainly better that TAKOs, the latter I've used for years. With about 8000 miles on them they do look like they wear faster than the Goodrich. I certainly will buy another set when the time comes.

Did you feel significant gains from the ovtune with the ko2’s on? I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on the tune this month. Was the tune worth it for you?
