I was going to tell her to run it again with no oil. When it locks up, add 6 quarts and have it towed in. The Aholes at the dealer pulled a fast one, so return the favor.

Yeah. I don't know how I would react myself. It is hard to have a clear head in that situation. Of course, the husband being state patrol kinda helped move things along.

Very true about the transmission. My guess is that if no drips can be seen, they just didn't fill it.

Contrary to popular belief on here, the only thing the dealer owes you is what is damaged, and maybe a little extra for inconvenience. You're likely not going to get a new engine (maybe a used one), and you're definitely not getting a new truck. I don't know what the hell everyone on this forum is smoking... I would not recommend going straight to corporate because you limit what the dealer may be willing to offer. Though an attorney may be inevitable, it should also be your last resort. If you're not comfortable or tech/mech savvy enough to confront the dealer, find someone who can advocate for you. At a minimum, the dealer needs to perform a complete diagnostic check of the engine that may include some disassembly. Have them repair it and really press them on a lengthy warranty. Document everything, and ask for all of the documentation that's been generated to date.

I had this happen to another car that I owned. The car was nearly new at the time. I had the owner of the garage write and sign a letter stating what he did and that he would take care of any related drivetrain issues for as long as I owned the car. Never had a problem. I sold the car about 10 years later with over 200k miles. I am not saying you won’t have a problem, but I didn’t. I would at minimum get the same letter.
I also had a local Toyota dealership not tighten the drain plug after trans service. Fluid had sprayed all over the bottom of the truck. I smelled it burning off exhaust when I got out. I had had transmission complaints documented from early on when I had it serviced from day one. They used that to get Toyota to replace the transmission. I don’t think that they told Toyota what they did.

If it’s a V6, I’m betting that the filter housing o-ring was installed at the top of the threads, and not in it’s proper groove in the cap. Just like they show not to do in the drawings and instructions on the filter box. :annoyed:

And I call BS on the lack of fault codes logged in the ECM. Cam timing faults caused by a loss of oil pressure are guaranteed on a VVTI engine that stalled due to a lack of oil pressure. They are lying to you, plain and simple.

Hmmm depending on if they used a tech stream connected to the internet I could see if they had any codes they cleared. I’d need the vin though..

Sorry this has happened to you. Unfortunately we as people tend to trust others to do the right thing. The sad thing is sometimes errors are made. I truly believe and hope the dealer is honest and willing to do the right thing. They are in the business of making money though. You need representation to help your situation. I truly suggest contacting a lawyer. Hell we living here in Florida, hear it all the time "Morgan & Morgan for the people". Give them a call and present your situation and let true legal advice help guide you or at least know what your options are. I don't believe they charge anything for this. If not them then at least a firm local to you who has worked cases against dealers or repair shops. You are not seeking legal advice to get paid or a new truck, you are just in need to protect your investment. Or maybe a new truck or any compensation you seek.
I hope you keep us posted on your situation and hope the right thing for you occurs. Good luck!

Yeah I don’t get where people get the idea that the dealership or Toyota would hand out a new engine, let alone a new truck. At best they will replace it with a scrap yard engine. More likely they will just open up the engine and say everything is fine and maybe extend the warranty on the engine.

Pretty standard on TW. It seems people here don't understand how the world works. Legally they can say "our bad" and tell her to kick rocks. If damage occurs down the road OP would still have a huge legal mountain to climb PROVING the incident caused any future damages. Storming in and demanding a new truck like a karen only worsens the chance of a favorable outcome. Toyota may be willing to go 'above and beyond' what they are legally required to do, basically to avoid bad PR, but making wild demands shuts down good will real fast.

Just imagine what they screw up and fix/hide that you don't know about... I know of a few things from friends that work at dealerships like this that never get reported to the owner.

    Work in progress...
I was fresh out of the Navy and working at the local Unocal. One Saturday, just before closing a BMW came in for a LOF. Easy Money, and off to the sports pub. F...ing left the filter O-ring on the motor block. Always make sure Ya get the O-ring off with the filter! Anyways, the owner was as cool as they come, he turned it off and called the shop as I was cleaning up getting ready to leave. Warning light came on and oil under the car. My Boss and business owner, really great man, called flat bed...I still had a job, customer still had a car...anyways, always make sure that O-ring comes off with the filter.

Bearings run on a film of pressurized oil, no oil, no pressure, damage occurs. It may RUN for another 10 K but there IS damage.

I wonder if the engine was knocking so bad that the knock sensor pulled so much timing out that the engine couldn't run.

Toyota doesn’t sell long blocks (at least they won’t release for warranty.) well
Over 8k I’d guess with reusing some things

    FWIW.

My parents bought an 04' Subaru outback brand new back in 04'. A couple years later my ma got an oil change at a jiffy-lube type place and came to pick me up at swim practice (I was in highschool at the time). On our way home the oil light came on, it's less than 5 miles from the school to their house so we just continued home.

When we got home I checked the oil, it was empty. Looked underneath and there was no drain plug in the pan. Oil change place paid for the tow and what not, they had forgotten to put the drain plug back in.

No new engine, no tear down, no extended warranty. I don't really know the specifics but I do know they had that car until 2016 and put nearly 200k on it with nary an engine issue. Thats even with me doing some stupid teenager shit AFTER it was ran dry.

OP I would push for what you can considering it was at a dealership, but it's probably fine. I'd imagine the car can shut itself down when low on oil before major damage occurs.

Op, I hate to say this, but they may try to take advantage of you due to being a woman. Since you said you were unsure of what they were telling you, i'd highly recommend that you communicate through writing only from now on to get a record of this. Also if they promise you something verbally, it is pretty much your word vs. theirs. Get everything in writing.

Personally I would push for a extended warranty on the engine and leave it at that. These things are pretty forgiving being ran dry. I’ve had plenty of toyotas come in after having oil changed at jiffy lube or the sort and people complain of them dieing out at stops with a knock.

It’s the cam gears running out of oil pressure and messing up timing. Throw oil in the cars and I’ve yet to have one actually need an engine if it was caught within 10-15 miles (unless it’s Walmart. They’ve destroyed 2 engines. They’re seriously experts at destroying motors)

If 6qts leaked out, youd have it all over youre engine bay. Ill bet they forgot to filler back up... they owe you a new engine, or a rebuild at the very least.
