    Some really cool shit
I only hit "like" because I can relate. Had to do the same with a three year old Chesapeake. Fortunately, it was a very good friend who took him, so I was able to visit semi often. It was only supposed to be temporary, but after a year I didn't have the heart to reclaim him when I could. He had a very good life.

    Some really cool shit
Having a very rough last couple days. My old dog, Bear, Chesapeake is about to turn 15 next month. As usual, he was sleeping with me on the bed Thursday night. Friday morning I felt him squirming around on the bed. Didn't make much of it until I heard him hit the floor at 4:30 in the morning. Because of arthritis in his front legs he asks for help to get off the bed. I get up and hes at the foot of the bed laying on his side like he was sleeping there. I help him up but he staggers down the hall, bumping into furniture, and the wall. We barely get downstairs. He gets a pee in before he can't walk at all. Always staggering to the right, and then collapsing. So, naturally, thoughts of this being the end race through my brain and my emotions start ripping me up. I end up pacing around until 9 o'clock, when the vet opens up. They can take me at 1100. When my wife gets up the emotions start ripping us both up, and it's not pretty.

At the appointed time I have to load Bear into the truck. He cannot stand, much less walk. The wife will not come with me as she thinks this might be the end, as well, and shes a basket case. Off to the vet. He goes through the exam, mostly physical, in nature. Squeezing, poking, pinching. Neck, spine, temperature, heart beat. The dogs heart is good for his age, and his muscles are good. Reaction to pinching is good. And his appetite is good. He responded normally to dog treats. Conclusion; he things it's old dogs disease, or Geriatric Vestibular Syndrome. Seems to fit the symptoms. So, haul him back home, and put him in his own bed. He rests there all day, and through the night. A couple attempts to get him up to pee fail. Yesterday morning my wife hears him moving around downstairs so she gets up to check on him. He is staggering around, which is actually an improvement. She assists taking him outside. No results. Brings him back in. He goes to his bed. Half hour later I hear banging around downstairs. I go down this time. He's looking up at me when I come down. He has moved around a bit, and taken a big dump on the floor. Cool. Good for him. I assist him outside and he staggers around to a spot, and pees. Again, progress. After clean up, we put him back in his bed. An hour later I am upstairs in the office as I can't sleep. Get up, go to the bedroom, and damn, Bear is lying next to our bed, per normal when no one has helped him onto the bed! He had to climb a flight of stairs to get to our bedroom so I'm stoked. I encourage him to get up and we go through the process to get him up onto the bed, like normal. He assists in making the jump. I'm thinking, wow, it's only been 24 hours since he became afflicted. Vet said it might be up to a week for recovery. So, he's fine most of the day. But, by evening, he's unable to walk again, and I'm seriously crushed. Same condition this morning. The syndrome is something in the inner ear that affects them like vertigo.

Thanks for listening. Therapy for me to write this. Looked up the disease on the net and they confirm what the vet said. Maybe a week or more before recovery. Just don't get how he had such a good day after only 24 hours, then back to not being able to walk. At 15 I know the end is near, but it's killing me anyway. This is Bear and Sadie yesterday morning.

I understand what you are going through and it isn’t easy. It is a helpless feeling that has no parallel. If I could play God, I would make it that every dog would not die until 1 second after it’s master.
