Lock up your keyfobs!!

Well that would make you dirty, mean, and dare I say, mighty unclean......

 

There is if it's in my driveway. And I won't even have to go answer any questions when they're done cleaning up.

 

The manual mentions the method above as a battery saving function, which will stop the fob from receiving radio waves.

Not sure if I understand the manual correctly, but it seems that you don't even have to turn off the fob, it will also happen automatically if

"The electronic key has been left in an area of approximately 6 ft. (2 m) of the outside of the vehicle for 10 minutes or longer"

 

Can you imagine spending thousands of dollars building a rig, only to have it stolen in a few seconds because you have a push button start.

OK Einstein, riddle me this. So the thieves intercept the code from my KEY. How the hell are they gonna cut a key so they can start the truck ??? They're not gonna start it without a key no matter what. Keyless Entry and Keyless Start are not the same thing.

 

But anything is possible

I don't yet know enough about this, but I believe one of the articles says up to 1000ft, which seems a good distance away.

Not too worried about this stuff, my girlfriend has a GX460, but we live in a small mountain town where not a lot of stuff happens. My vehicles still use keys, I like the MB key the best (no long piece of metal sticky out), but my next one will most likely be keyless because I want an upgrade midsize pickup. Where my concerns will happen is when I travel.

 

Well, very sorry to hear this happened and hope you can get the truck back. That's gotta be a sick feeling in the stomach to have this happen and you've definitely got my sympathies. Man, I feel bad and wish there was anything I/we could do to help. Let's hope the cops can find the low-lifes who did this and the truck in good condition. Even if the fob range is limited, maybe a directional high-gain antenna with some sort of signal amp could enable these punks to pull off something like this.

But am also curious, how did you know/find out it was stolen this way?

 

Ok hard ass. You do know you can’t just shoot people right? Castle doctrine allows for the protection of people. If they are in the process of breaking into your house, sure because you don’t know their intent. If they are driving off with your truck or walking out with your TV, guess what, YOU’RE not threatened. Just your stuff is. Good luck in court with that one jack ass.

 

Oh calm down. And actually, in Texas (where I live) the law is different. I'm not gonna call you any names, but you are wrong. And yeah I went a little "pew pew Murica!" there for effect. I apologize if I offended your feelings. I dont actually have any signs like that on my house. Just making a point, in bad taste perhaps....

 

You didn’t offend me. Just imagine how many people on here make those same comments and actually believe or act on them though. You might be joking but a lot aren’t. Again not offended, just actions like that make it harder for responsible gun owners.

The laws in TX are different but you still can’t shoot someone for stealing.

 

If someone is attempting to steal something on my property in the middle of the night, yes I 100% can. I like to think I wouldn't, but 100% legal to do so.

 

How can the range be 1000fts when fob signal only travels for few feets? Doesn’t seem right to me.

There are other types of attacks that can pickup your Fobs “unlock” signal and replicate that to unlock the vehicle. Maybe that Signal can be picked up 1000fts away. But they won’t be able to turn the engine on that way, but only enter the vehicle.

Read the articles. If it’s close enough to pick up the signal to unlock, it’s close enough to steal the signal the vehicle. Doesn't really matter if it seems right to you or not, it has happened multiple times in multiple locations.

 

But if it's one of those keyless ignitions with a push-button start, then I believe the thief (scumbag) only needs a fob programed to work on your truck? All they'd have to do is push the start button.

 

It looks like the trims that use a physical key are the SR's and SR5's. The TRD's and up appear to all have push-buttons, right or wrong? This would actually make me wanna settle for the lower trims, even though I was really considering a TRD Sport or Off-Road.

And again, with a directional yagi antenna and a signal amp, you could prolly increase the range.

 

Turn the fob off at night and you don’t have to worry about it.

 

This is crazy stuff. I guess this is what happens when we want all the fancy gizmos and doodads though. Tech can beat tech every time.
