Just want some info on the Hitachi shocks that come with the Sport. I know there a bit stiff riding but they do dampen the small bumps well. How is the longevity of these shocks has anyone experienced any premature failure. Some folks mentioned here on TW they replaced the Rears only with 5100s and it softened the the ride.

I think the Limited has Hitachis but I'm not sure they are the same.

At 45k miles I have noticed the front ones bounce a little more than I feel it should over a apwwd bump. The rears reel fine. I plan to replace them at 60k miles.

The Limited, SR5, and SR all have the same shocks.

I'm at 31,000 miles and the Hitachi shocks seem to ride as good as when they first broke in. They are, naturally, a stiffer ride than the OEM shocks on the Off Roads or Pros and the travel not as forgiving. I just take my time when I'm mudding or trailing. The Sport, surprisingly, takes washboards a lot better than my buddy's Jeep Rubicon.

My SR5 had Hitachi shocks stock and I've compared them to what's on my friends TRD Sport and other than the color (and likely the dampening quality) they are identical to what were on my truck. I took my truck down a ~30 mile washboard gravel and dirt road and made up my mind on replacing the shocks because it was teeth chatteringly violent in terms of being shaken and tossed by the rough road going between 20 and 30 mph. The fact is all of the stock shocks on all of the models excluding the TRD pro are depressingly small diameter which means less ability to dampen impacts, which does honestly, probably not affect on road habits very much at all. I think the bottom line is, the stock shocks are sufficient for most applications but for not a lot of money you can get a substantially larger and better dampening set of shocks. I have OME nitrocharger 90021 shocks and they feel about the same as the stock shocks did on road and handle big bumps a bit better.

Sport has it's own shocks that are different from all other trims.

I replaced my sport shocks with the 5100s on all four corners. I think the stock suspension is good for general use, and a little jittery. I ran my rears over 100 000 km before replacing with 5100s. The best upgrade for me to date.
