Air Compressors

You talking about an AC Compressor on the serpentine belt under the hood, or an AC powered compressor on the 400w outlet in the bed?

 

On the bed outlet, small older one, don’t know if I can find the wattage info on it. Only thing I’ve run of the bed plug in is a shop vac and hedge trimmers.

 

did your vacuum work well? I've tried my little 1.5 gallon shop vac and it didn't have much suction. Looking it up now, it takes around 800 watts.

You might be able to find a tiny AC compressor, but a cheap one that just has alligator clips to hook to your car battery would probably be much better.

 

I don't know what Toyota uses for their inverter.... But inductive loads and DC inverters are generally a bad combination. Inrush current is usually large, 3-4x running current. And If the inverter isn't clean, the AC motor will get real hot, real fast.

 

"Technically" speaking, just about any compressor will do just fine. It's all a matter of how fast do you want to air up.

I got tired of the buddies I wheel with and their ARB Twins filling up all of the tires by the time I was wrapping up my second with my Harbor Freight pump. So I just got the ARB Twin. Plenty of "Dammit we're waiting on Alec again" shit talk lol

 

Wait til one of your buddies gets something like the Warn Powerplant... Seems at least 2-3x as fast as the ARB Twin.

 

I have this one and love it. Saved money for other things.

I just remember him hooking up the Warn, then his Twin arb, walking back to his tire being filled by the warn and it being WAY overinflated. He then proceeded to fill up a couple more tires while the ARB was still working on it's first.

 

I got the ARB twin. Works like a champ. If it breaks I will swear like a drunk Aussie.

 

Not remotely enough juice for the small pancake compressors (e.g. Dewalt) if that's what you're thinking. Those draw something like 10A@110v peak which is about 3x what the truck can provide.

The ARB twin is the standard because it's easily mounted and ubiquitous in the market but I have a hard-mounted Viair 450C that has been dead nuts reliable. You can do a dual Viair setup if you need more flow while the ARB twin is already just two of the smaller ARB units in a single assembly.

 

Or you could throw a refillable air tank in the back and call it a day.

 

I have a 3 gal, seems to do ok, I just use it for my driver side floor, country living equals mud, gravel, leaf litter so I clean it every couple days. Usually about two three minutes with truck running.

Just make sure you don't accidentally pinch the air line while it's running! While stretching the coiled line going around the front tires, the tube pinched and blew the internal check valve. That was that.

 

I found this at Lowes. It fits nicely behind the back seat compartments. Allows you to preset your psi. Can be used with 12V power outlet or household outlet.

That plugs into a cigarette lighter... which means it will take several minutes per tire to inflate. There is just not enough power to be fast like the ones that clip directly onto the battery.

I had a Coleman pump back in the 80s that plugged into the lighter. It took 9 minutes to add 20 psi to each tire (compared to about 3 minutes with the battery clip compressor). That was with 13" tires, too! Try the outlet in the Tacoma bed and see if it has enough amps to run the 110v option, I think not.

Buy once, cry once. This is the route I took as well.

 

If you're just going out occasionally, you could get away with just about any air compressor. It really comes down to how much time you mind spending airing back up, usually the more expensive the faster it'll go. I go out almost every single weekend and just use a Ryobi dual air compressor as I have tons of Ryobi batteries (though only 1 it's needed for fil all 4 tires) and it's extremely precise, you can also set it to the exact pressure you want and leave it to trend to your vehicle inspections post offroading and it'll shut off on its own. The only issue, it can take about 7 minutes per tire to go from 20psi to 35psi but I personally never care as I'm easily entertained.
