Thanks again! After a little courage... a little diagram is even more helpful.

A bit more info for you all attempting the swap

FJ Automatic transmission uses the VF2A transfer case
FJ Manual transmission uses the VF2B transfer case (full time 4wd with center differential in t-case)
Tacoma auto and manual uses a VF2BM transfer case

I've attached all the documentation that describes dissassembly of the FJ case we want for our trucks (VF2A)

Ok so I successfully installed the FJ case, but I'm still getting the 4x4 lights flashing, and now an ABS light (unrelated?).

When I wired the TC I unbolted the sensors from the Tacoma case and bolted them into the FJ case because they had the plugs that would match the Tacoma harness at the chassis. The sensors on the FJ had different plugs than the Tacoma so I simply swapped the sensors from the Tacoma TC to the FJ TC.

Do I have to rewire the Tacoma plugs to the original FJ sensors and solder the Tacoma plugs to the FJ sensors that were originally bolted to the TC?

Or is it more likely that I have the sensors reversed?

    Yep
    Connect 4wd sensor wire (red w/ blue stripe - B 22) to the 4wd light wire (solid red - A 19)

    Connect 4lo sensor wire (yellow w/ black stripe - B 17) to the 4lo light wire (brown w/ white stripe - A 11)

Edit: if you’re an 08-11 Toyota changed the 4wd wire from solid red to grey w/ black stripe.

be sure to unplug both connectors F12 and F13 from the 4wd ECU

    Ah yes I'm an '08

Also, since I've done the ADD delete, should I just unplug the 4wd ECU and forget about wiring the lights for the dash? I don't need the light to know if I'm in 4hi/4lo

Yes unplug the ECU both connectors. you can forget about the dash lights, but it’s only 3 minutes worth of work to have indication, why would you not?

I appreciate the help! Just so I'm clear. I need to swap back the sensors and wire the Tacoma plugs to the Fj sensors in the case? or am I good to use the original Tacoma sensors and just double check I didn't put the 4hi in the 4lo locations?

Does anyone happen to know the orientation of the shift rails for 2wd? I don’t have the factory shifter handy and I’m cracking my FJ case open soon.

leave the Tacoma sensors in, that’s fine. The 4x4 sensor should be put on the passenger side of the case and 4lo on the drivers side of the case.

what do you mean by orientation? The shift rail will be all the forward for 4x4 and towards the back of the case for 2wd

That’s what I was looking for. Just wanted to verify the case is in 2wd before I open it up... guess I could just turn the input shaft and find out, just thought of that :tinfoilhat:

in 2Hi the shift rod on right (pass side) is half way and if you pull the shifter down in 4hi the shaft extends out like the other side20200123_142537.jpg 20200123_142654.jpg

This was extremely helpful! I was able to do the twin stick mod and since I had one seal go, I figured I would do the “overhaul kit” from toyota. $75 Canadien. Just waiting on new shifter detent pins because mine stripped out.

So I read on here that boots could be torn on the FROR shifters. Heads up for those to just check this aluminum plate. Mine had a lot of sharp edges which could have caused the boot to tear over time. May be missed in the grand scheme of the install.

Mine tears once a year and I’m sick of it. I ordered another case today to install with a stock shifter.

Not sure, FJ case went in Spring 17 so less than 3 years, probably closer to 18 months.
