If you figure out a way to do a V8 swap and keep 4x4 that’d be awesome. After a very brief search, it seems 1st gens were easier to swap to V8. If you rebuild you could join those cool kids in the stroker club. Replace would be cheapest, but you hope it’s a good engine. I’m also interested in the back story.

A lot of work, but rings and pistons are an easy fix. Just no stronger than before. Done that a couple of times. ;)

Okay, but the question is, is that a valves issue at your mileage, or a piston issue? You are a 2014 so you can't have that much miles on it..

    Or can you?

we're thinking rings, 20psi dry and 60 wet on 5&6. leads to rings?
had the misfire codes cold (and would run like garbage) warmed up it ran good (well enough to not throw codes)

dont know what i did, had the SC installed at the dealer at about 3k miles. ran it stock till about 3k miles ago when i started to get the misfire code. did injectors (thinking it could fix the problem, but didnt). i have bad luck with vehicles, had a 7.3L tow rig that cracked a rocker arm at 100k.

I think ill rebuild the 4L. have a line in a stroker kit with cams and stuff for a great price from a member on here. id like to have the motor built by a reputable shop so i can drop it in. any recommendations?

Stock tune? I’d do a leak down and figure out where the issue is, maybe just have to pull the heads.

Also, is the intercooler filled and pump working?

it was the stock TRD tune, now HP tuners for the injectors and pulley.

Agreed. I periodically check mine while the truck is on to see if I can feel activity from the inlet and outlet. It's just good to check anyways.

I check mine often especially because it leaks. And every now and again my pump makes a strange noise, I think I am going to replace it soon just to be safe. I just switched jobs again so I should be good to go and have some free time to work on the truck finally.

    The saga continues..

Just dropped the truck off at another exhaust shop per a recommendation. Definitely good vibes from the owner. 62 and been doing it for 41 years. Nice local old timer. Same old as far as the exhaust. 2.5" Y, no cats, into 3" collector, 3" piping into a resonator and then into the biggest Magnaflow he can stuff in there. Dumped over axle. He quoted high at 600 and said it'll most likely be under that.
    Pick it back up tomorrow.

That sound from the pump is probably air bubbles and/or not enough coolant in the reservoir

No, technically an aftermarket catch can will fail the visual portion of the CA smog check. But it was the least of my worries when it came to the bi-annual checks and I've never been dinged for it. My aftermarket catch can is anodized black in color and I keep it sort of dirty/dusty to blend into the engine bay.

I had to smog my truck last month. First shop, the tech flat out refused the job after asking me to pop my hood. The 2nd shop wouldn't proceed with the test because I didn't have the carb eo# sticker for the trd blower. (Never came with my fitkit and toyota USA was a dead lead).

The 3rd shop tested me without any questions and the tech/owner complimented me on my truck and it passed without a hitch.

All 3 shops were smog only test centers and not affiliated. 1-man operations style. 3rd shop was in a less affluent part of NorCal.

What the heck? The stock plastic coolant bottle leaks? What leaks and what do I need to get it to stop?
