Hi folks I bought this car about a month and half ago and been chugging along and fixing small things as per my other posts.

But the car came with a sticker of an auto repair shop that says a "service" is due.

I have not spoken to those people yet, but I will and ask what is included in this "service" and how much would cost.

Parallel to this, I wonder what do you guys do to a car my age and mileage, if you just change oil and filter and repair things as they come, or go a bit deeper into checking stuff with a list at hand.

The only problems I have right now is an error P0133 that I will address in due course and if I let the car idle and press the brake pedal very slightly I feel an intermittent drag. Apart from this the care brakes well.

Seeking here any ideas, the goal is to sink as little money as possible in the car while at the same time avoiding major malfunctions, so to say keep it running, keep it safe and keep it well maintained.

    Your important qualified opinions sought.

    Thanks

...and on the issue of oil change, what oil and oil filter brand would you use?

The sticker is likely from the last shop that did an oil change on the truck. I would tear it off and forget about it if you plan on doing an oil change soon.

As for the oil+filter brand, really any 5w-30 Conventional is fine. Some run Synthetic, but I dont after seeing my rear main seal begin to leak while I had Synthetic oil in the engine. As for the filter, most on here only use Toyota OEM, but any Fram, Wix, Napa, etc filter will work fine enough.

Well I guess let's start with the p0133 code. This indicates the ECU detected a slower than normal reaction time from the O2 sensor. This will likely be corrected with a new O2 sensor. It is important to replace with Denso brand (they make the OEM sensor for Toyota) or use the OEM Toyota Part for any of the sensors with the Tacoma.
So new O2 sensor takes care of the MIL P0133. And this is something you will want to do sooner rather than later.

For your oil change, use whatever oil makes you feel good. Whether it's lower cost makes you feel good or highest quality oil. They will all work in the Tacoma. Some will say plain conventional is fine and they're not wrong. Some will say super duper synthetic and they're not wrong either.

Any oil filter will be fine also. With any oil filter change, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS MAKE SURE THE O-RING IS SEATED CORRECTLY.

The squeal, when doing the oil change it might be a good idea to have new belts on hand and replace them, if you don't know how old they are or you can tell they need replacing. Chirping might be a belt slipping, might be a bearing in one of the idler or tensioner pulleys chirping. On belt brands, stay with OEM, Bando, Gates, Dayco. They all make oem belts for the car makers to use in their factories.

If a belt can be twisted past 90 degrees between your fingers at midpoint between pulleys it's too loose and could possibly squeal on start up.

hey thanks a lot to all contributors, great information in here

my taco is not misbehaving re. the error mentioned, nothing abnormal at all

just to see if I got it right, am I allright in doing just an oil and filter change and then correct issues as they pop up?

The MIL for P0133 is abnormal and should be corrected. The ECU is just kind of blindly doing the best it can on the air fuel mix without the proper feedback from the sensor. Over time, the issues that may arise as a direct result of not correcting your P0133, is that the air fuel mix will be richened or leaned to try and get the fuel trims to the correct values. Imagine the ECU trying to do that with a bum sensor reporting to it. If it goes on too long the rich fuel mix can kill catalytic convertors, carbon/foul up the EGR system, can cause the spark plugs to foul or wear prematurely, etc.
So while you don't see it 'misbehaving' or see the symptom/s right away for that troubleshooting code, eventually it will definitely affect further things down the road if not corrected.
You do what you want, obviously, with your Tacoma. I'd feel bad if down the road you ran into some costly repairs because we told you not to worry about that MIL. If it was my little brother in your shoes I would tell him to address the MIL sooner rather than later :D

Awesome. You can save some money by buying the Denso sensor that doesn't have the Toyota logo on it, instead of buying the same sensor with the Toyota logo and double the cost.

You have one sensor upstream (before the catalytic convertor) and then another aft of it.
So the downstream part number looks to be 234-4153. I won't do your price shopping for ya but here's where I get my stuff. Some people get butthurt that Amazon isn't a true car parts store.... I don't mind that Amazon sells more than car parts.

Don't sweat it, he was just trying to help you. He musta misunderstood or had you mixed with another. We've had a couple guys get banned unfortunately for not knowing about the selling things rules, but not applicable to you obviously.
    But we're all good here:D

Thanks for backing me up bro. I have a million questions and I am not posting to get qualified to sell anything.

This is my first Tacoma and it is in less than ideal shape for me used to vintage concourse conditions, lol

I am trying to pace myself and not alienate the forum readers, I can post about a dozen new threads with questions, I have a lot to learn.

    Thanks again

    That's a good point.
    @Muttley1
In the section 'You' of your profile, it allows you to fill out the sections saying what your Tacoma specs are and stuff so folks know how to answer the different questions as they come up. Basically, if you fill that part out on your profile, that will make it easiest for those of us that want to help with your questions as we'll have your Tacoma's specs right there visible for all:D
Don't sweat it, seriously. You're fine. Because of the limited/no tacoma info in your profile and lower post count, it looked like you COULD have been sketch. But it's obvious you're not.
