I have question maybe someone might know the answer to. I’m about to have to squeeze two car seats into the back of my 2017 double cab Tacoma. I was wondering if anyone has taken out the rear back section to create more room for the car seats and obviously is there a safe and legal way of doing it. I’m 6 foot and doubt I’ll be able to drive with car seats on both sides of the truck. So I’m hoping I can figure out a way so I don’t have to trade the truck in

You mean the plastic storage bins behind the seats?

If so, yes you can remove them, no it wont make more seat space.

No, and any modfying may make them weaker.

They have low profile forward facing seats that may be more up to your needs. But it sounds like you need a family mover.

I did the same today, and I’m over 6 ft. Convertible car seat for my 3 year old on the passenger side and click connect infant seat in the middle. I figure I’ll put the child lock on the passenger side, let my 3 year old climb into his seat, then click the baby into the middle, then buckle my 3 year old. Not ideal, but there is a lot more room once they move to a convertible, so I figure 2 years of cramp. Wife’s car is the family hauler, so I’ll only have 2 kiddos in my truck a day or 2 a week.

Do you have 2 rear facing seats or one of each?

right now we have a rear facing that can be used as a forward facing and we also have the infant car seat that can click in. so I guess ill be doing the same thing as Franky86 just have the infant in the middle and rear facing on the passanger side. I know it might be a little crazy but it feels like they should let you take out the rear plastic storage and move the seats back a few inches or even some sort of seat conversion so you could put the old access cab seats in the back.

I have forward facing behind driver seat, and infant on the passenger. I can have my seat a couple clicks from all the way back with the kid in the seat. You just gotta survive until you have them facing forward.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Tacoma dbcb with car seats didn’t work for my son. He drives a Tundra Crewmax now.

Double cab was fine for our kids, both went through rear facing, to convertibles, now on boosters..

Literally just went through this dilemma a month ago. I was about to trade in the Taco for Tundra.

My 3 year old sits on the passenger side front facing and my newborn is in the middle, my original concern was that there aren’t any anchor points in the middle seat and I DID NOT like just running the seat belt through as an alternate method. I ended up using a anchor point on the drivers side and another anchor point on the passenger side. Yes the one anchor point on the passenger side will have 2 seat tethers clipped into it, it may not be per manufacturers recommendations but I feel like that’s a safer way and I still have full adjustability to the drivers seat

It works well for us and I can still access the storage under the back seat or fold it down for the dog. Also you can directly see the child a lot better through the rear view mirror

Best thing it kept me from having to jump back into a full size right away...although I had already envisioned myself in a Tundra haha

Shouldn't those seats be rear facing for safety?

The one in the middle is rear facing, the other is a booster seat that's forward facing.

Yes sir the middle one that you see is just the base for the infant seat to snap into

Congrats on the new coming addition to the family!

The bottom of the rear seat backrest folds down and is hinged at the bottom. There is no way you could slide is back even if you removed the plastic. Plus, car seats are built to fit backrest that are angled. Even if you pushed the backrest back the top wouldn't move and you wouldn't gain any room. You should go to a big box store and test fit some different seats and find ones that work for you. Modifying your back seats is not the ticket.

Congrats, lot of helpful members here with little kids. I have a 5 and 6 year old who have ridden in my Tacomas since newborn. It can be cramped at times but it works safely and I would rather not have a full size truck.
