You sure you aren't hearing the AC system though, charge gets low and it makes the engine shudder and it clickes and whooshes

Just watched this vid - he makes it look easy. Does mention after removing the bolts and carefully using a pry bar to separate the trans from the engine to take your time as it may be seized in some locations.

When I put my hand on the VSV I can also feel it click on and off rapidly. I thought I found the problem when I switched the hose to the vacuum booster with a tighter one, but then it started back up again today. I'll have to keep messing with it.

@eon_blue my bad, yours doesn't obstruct the grille at all.

As for removing the radiator, I was referencing tim's vid figuring it just made it easier to work on the TB replacement with the extra room.

The ARB completely obstructs the grille and you can't remove it without removing the ARB bumper. From what I have seen, in order to reach those bolts for the radiator, you have to remove the grille. At least I think you do - not sure if you can reach them from under the truck, bottom I imagine you can but the tops, doubt it. :notsure:

I'm pulling off my ARB soon to add a winch, fix my hazy headlights, and add a trans cooler. Some drawbacks to being so close to the grille.

I had the whole charcoal canister replaced about 3 years ago, and I assume it came with a new one. I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with a vacuum leak - never had a problem until I started replacing hoses. haha

A kid I knew freshman year called me up to look at an 02 PreRunner DC for him. It had a dealer installed SolAire sunroof. Pretty nice driving around with all the windows and sunroof down. And it still retracted back fine and wasn't gunked up with crap like all the 3rd gen 4Runners seem to be.

I told him not to buy the truck since it's catalytic converter was toast, throttle position sensor was acting up, and like 8 more codes plus a few pending were on. But he went and bought it for $5K with 230,000 on it. Whatever. Oh and it needs a timing belt and front end refresh.

how many have you replaced so far (hoses)? Maybe go back and check each one again? If you did, sorry - didn't read over your previous posts yet.

It's actually pretty damn easy. Watch the video that @Timmah! made and it'll all make sense. It does take a specialty tool or two, but you can rent or borrow them from fellow members.

thanks. its not about it being intimidating or difficult really (and yep, watched tim's vids on both). Hell, timing belt is not even really due - I think I have another 30k. The apprehension I have is simply because of the other things on the list and just doing them all at the same time since i'll be right there. VCGs, timing belt, trans cooler install, coolant flush - just being lazy. Have another vehicle so its no big thing if it takes a few days.

the real priority is the VCGs since they are weeping. I need to just suck it up and get it done. Thx for the feedback.

Hey, I DID change the oil today... lol. Shaking off the lazies buddy. I need to call ARB about those caged nuts or look for a suitable replacement locally. Once I have them, I'll tackle this stuff.

The fight that went on with those things getting the bumper on - EPIC. I mentioned earlier and anyone who has an ARB knows what I'm talking about - if one of those damn things does drop down when you're trying to thread the bolt, then you have to start all over by removing the bumper completely to fish out the nut. You could have one side secured working on the other and have to start ALL OVER. Sucks.

The problem I think is these things are just worn, I picked up this bumper from another member. The nut is very similar to these:

    upload_2020-1-21_0-4-23.jpg

other than that, the process is relatively straight forward. Floor jack with some lumber and it can definitely be a solo install. Extra pair of hands helps but not necessary.
