Push Start Ignition Button

Hi TW! I just purchased a 2002 Taco yesterday and ready to get started working on this. One of the first things i wanted to do is install a push button along with remote start/alarm. Have you done this to your 1st gen tacoma? How is the experience getting it installed? Do you have a recommendation of a kit?

Amazon has this kit that has it all that I've looking at so far.

Also curious if we I could hook a TRD button to this kit. I haven't seen much around this and once I get started, I would probably do a write up on how I installed it.

Any help would be appreciated and pictures of where you position the button!

 

the only thing I can see being a problem is not having a physical key. most new cars have a hidden key in the fob. my truck the drivers side door actuator is going bad after 18 years. and when it goes out completely I will need a key to unlock the door (which already is happening) one way around that is install aftermarket door actuators. but still doesn't address the malfunctioning door actuator. i have contemplated this for awhile. my fail safe will be what I did in highschool is keep a spare key in my wallet just incase.

 

I had that thought as well as I was just going to keep the actual key on the keychain along with the aftermarket fob.

 

i'm a minimalist when it comes to my key's. just my truck key, alarm fob and my tonneau cover key. i don't even like key chains on my keys. I don't even carry a house key just my garage door opener. yes we had a power outage once and I was locked out. but I rather be locked out at home then locked out of my truck esp if i'm out of town.

but as far as alarm install it's not hard as long as you have a meter and wiring diagram. i didn't do my truck alarm, my buiddy did it but I did all the rest of my cars. I have had remote start on all my cars but living in socal, I have not needed to use it. when i lived in VA yes everyday i used it.

 

I don't carry much either. I'm use to have having a push start button on my others cars and my buddy has changed his '17 tundra from a key to push button but it cost him $1500 which is a not a bit outrageous at all (sarcasm). But if you know how to read wire diagram and match them to the alarm diagram. Should be clip and play. the push start button feature is something I really want in the truck.

 

i feel you. despite my arguments for not doing it, I will most likely end up doing it myself. I have a viper ESP 550 in my truck now but never use my alarm since I don't park it outside and the only time i take it out of the garage is for car shows. I just want a good module. not some flyby night company. I already disengaged my clutch so I don't need to step on my clutch to start (for remote start) but I will look for a non remote start version.

Maybe the push button will move to the floor so you can use your foot??

It looks like a rip off of a system I used 4 or 5 years ago, made by digital guard dog. It was more expensive than that one. I still have it in the garage somewhere.

They're a little more complicated to install than an alarm, took a bit longer to get set up as well.

 

I'd rather they move the dimmer switch back to the floor. Even after all these years, I still have trouble getting my foot up to the steering column to dim my lights.
