I start my '19 and drive, and about 3 minutes later it's blowing hot air. It was 15 degrees this morning.

Set to auto at the highest temperature setting. If the cab is not burning up after 25 minutes of driving, you have a problem.

It’s definitely something I can live with, as long as you guys don’t think it would have any detrimental effect on engine life?

I could be wrong but I think I remember reading that the electric heat element used to supplement the standard heater core (until the coolant reaches warm enough temp to heat the vehicle) was part of a separate package called "cold area package" or something along those lines, and possibly included the electric block heater as part of the package. Couldn't even get one in the south if I remember the post correctly.

I'm fairly sure I don't have it in my 18. I have the exact same problem as the OP. Some of these people chiming in saying it's more than adequate living in areas they consider cold when it's 30 degrees.

Thanks for all the reply’s really cool to get so many! Is there any way to check the thermostat without pulling it?

I believe all V6's come with it, pretty sure if you look at the Underhood fuse box you will see a couple relay's marked PTC.

If it doesn't work when you set it to AUTO and the temp to high, just take it to the dealer.

You can also view PID data via an OBDII port reader. You will be able to view the coolant temp in real time to get a good idea of what the thermostat is doing.

So 24 degrees here today, started truck cold after work shift, cranked heat controls, and I'll be damned but there was much warmer than outside air at the vents.

I have a 19 without auto climate control.

Still took the engine almost 15 minutes to reach operating temp.

I appreciate you posting this and @shakerhood for bringing the subject up, I had no idea we had a "preheater"!

Harbor Freight sells a cheap infrared thermometer you can point at various things to get a temp reading - that would work great, point it at the top and bottom radiator hoses/tstat housing while the truck warms and you'll get a great idea of when the tstat opens.

My ‘19 is the same, very slow to warm up. Takes about 3 miles or so to blow decent warm heat on auto (68) with butt warmers on high. Takes 15 min under actual driving to warm to full normal temp. If I get stuck at a stop light for 5 min the temp gauge won’t move, however it will do a high idle about 1200-1300 rpm. I have a manual. Temps in my morning drives 5-35 (F) so far this winter.

Maybe 15 minutes to get to operating temp is normal then? Just seems a bit slow compared to others

On way home with air going to dashboard vents it heated like a champ! I guess it’s just the floor vents that suck
