You told me the story of how your truck should have been totaled...

Did you ever see this thread of mine?

I have 1996, 1998, and 2001 Tacoma sales brochures in my automotive literature collection; In 1998, power steering was listed as standard on all V6 and 4x4 models, but in 2001 it was standard even on the most basic 4-banger 2WD models...

I'm curious if anyone knows when power steering became standard on our beloved Tacos?

:notsure: i've had 2 Toyota cars with no power steering
    '78 Celica
    '79 Corolla

if memory serves me, i never really noticed they did not have power steering either
but if a vehicle does have power steering and it fails for whatever reason you do notice it has no power steering i.e., very difficult to steer iirc
i may be wrong about this however... its been decades

My '94 base (not even a rear bumper) 4WD 22RE PU came with only one feature, the power steering. Cost was 11.9k new.

I would honestly love to find a no-frills '95 or '96 Taco RC 2WD with a manual transmission and no power steering, preferably in white since it probably wouldn't A/C; I'd add a killer stereo, some nice rims, and window tint, but otherwise I'd keep it completely stock!

were the power brakes non functional i.e. broken?
the Corollas brakes went out in 2oo4 so had to junk it, had it for almost 12 years (25yr old car) , it also had no working heat or defrost, just those electric defrost lines on the back hatch worked lol

I've driven a metric fuck ton of vehicles in my life. I've never seen a truck without power steering. It just doesn't work, even on the small 15's on the older 2WD models of the 80's it's too much force to turn.

Rack and pinion was revolutionary with 1995.5 Tacoma, and the 2005 introduced effortless rack and pinion that was compared to sports cars on release.

Edit: There were non-power assist in the early 90's! Maybe not in Canada, but we didn't see as many 4 cylinder 2WD models as the states.

Brain fart! It was the other way around; Power brakes and may have even had ABS, but no power steering...

    Editing now!
