Yep, Indian head pennies are so cool looking and yours has so much detail for finding it in the ground for who knows how many years. Maybe 2020 - 1899 = 121 years??

Did you find that out near your home base? Lone Pine winters and summers are pretty harsh, it looks good for such an old copper.

Not to change the subject too much, but do you still use your GB2? If so, how well does it work with discrimination? I am still on the fence about them, and found a nice used one at a local dealer. He also has a nice almost new Gold Monster I am salivating over too, wow!:spending:

Been debating getting into this. Just not sure if it’s worth the money on the equipment, but at the same time I’ve probably spent money in dumber things. Found a garret ace 250 on Craigslist, they are asking $150 for it. Maybe could get it for around $100. Just don’t want to spend a ton of money on something if I only go out a few times or mainly will find trash. Got a few parks around me one being pretty old. I kinda feel like it probably best to stay away from the parks and beaches. Probably find more junk than anything. I’d imagine most of the good finds were found years ago by previous detectors. I think maybe it would be beneficial going to where people haven’t been in a long time. Maybe around the old train station, along hard to access parts of the canal, old trails in the woods. Anyone have experience with places like this vs the average beach or park?

I don't detect beaches or parks or anywhere else modernly occupied for that matter. You are right they are full of trash, but people also have a lot of success at them for modern "valuables" thats just not what Im into. I like to research and find older spots in the middle of nowhere. Also I always have one of the detectors in the truck, so when Im on other trips hunting / camping / fishing / etc and I see a spot that looks like it has history ill get out and swing around.

If you don't think it might be worth ~150$ for you to try it may not be. Also you will definitely "mainly find trash" .... just part of the hobby. But as you may realize if you get into a place thats very remote but has had historic habitation, the "trash" you will find will be old which is not a bad thing, old cans / nails / rivets / etc etc is a good thing. The good stuff is almost always in the trashy areas.

im just getting into this myself but id say you will find junk everywhere, but not everything is going to be found...a guy searching with a detector might not have dug deep enough or on target, or stopped just before the prize. Beaches are going to constantly have new stuff, and old that people havent found. Other than pull tabs and beer bottle caps everthing is going to have a story, part of the fun is to speculate how the item was lost or even where it was found. Are you going to find gold bars first time out? Nope, but what keeps you going is you might find something valuable or interesting. If you go out first time and find a pull tab, and say " well guess its time to give up nothing here" this hobby isnt for you. Just my thoughts

You also have to know your trash! Old bottles with applied tops vs cast, and old square nails vs wire can tell a lot about the site including it’s age. There are even some books and guides just about old bottle bottoms out there, so research is definitely part of the fun of the hobby.

I don’t know much about the hobby, and just wonder how good a cheap detector is. I seen some upwards of like 25k for a detector. Some of the ones for a couple hundred look cheap. I guess as long as they work that’s all that matters. I just don’t want to spend $500 on something that sucks and can’t find anything. I go out a few times and then it sits around for a few years and is worth $20 after the fact. How’s the used market? I always get nervous with used electronics. Not sure how good these coils are, but knowing electronics and electrical I know you ain’t repairing one. Not sure how much the tech has changed over the last 20-30 years? Assuming probably more so the last 5-10 years. How Obsolete are older detectors now?

I’d probably be happy finding anything that is somewhat old, or I don’t know what it is or how it could of got where it did. Stuff like that I find intriguing. Just doing some digging in my own small city (outskirts) yard I have found some cool stuff. I found a ring (gold 14k, not sure if the diamonds are real) a few small random items, a dead pet bird buried in a plastic container with some toys and a letter. And also a huge pile of burnt nails and debris. I consider the nails junk but it was a pretty random location for them to be buried near the edge of a fence line. I guess even finding that was somewhat exciting in a weird way. Obviously I know there would probably be plenty of times you go out and find nothing or just a few old bottle caps and can tabs. I’m sure it makes finding the good stuff a lot more special. I think I’d rather walk an old rail line or some old cabin or something than around modern public areas. If I’m gonna find bottle caps I’d rather find ones that are 30-60 years old vs 3 months lol.

I don’t expect to find much on the beaches here. Not much for beaches around here anyways. Not that there can’t be anything cool to find there or stuff that hasn’t been found. We don’t really have the type of beaches where people lay around so I wouldn’t expect their to be much that was lost. I would expect to find a bunch or bottle caps and can tabs though. I think it’s worth finding out if I can get a decent detector cheap. Right now it’s more about finding the time to go out. I bought a fishing magnet last year and never got the chance to take it out. Just didn’t want to have the same thing happen buying a nice detector. Was busy with work (overnights) and going back to school. Hopefully this year I’ll have some more time to do some things.

Those really through me off for a minute. I was like wtf are these. Funny because there is a town named Sanborn close by so I assumed it was a map of that but then showed different counties. Had to google them. Thanks I’ll take a look.

About 12 years with most of that time chasing gold. I started seeking coins about three years ago, but got serious about it a year and a half ago.

Not really. Almost an ounce total with most of it very small. I did find a half ounce nugget in Nevada.
