I want to do something dumb.. talk me out of it.

I am thinking about buying a second set of tires for off-road/camping/overlanding.

I don’t want to daily-drive anything higher than an SL rated tire.

I just bought new wheels tires.

I am thinking of either selling my stock rims and buying a cheap pair of 17s and pairing them with either C or E rated tires or using my stock rims as a second set. I would only use them on weekends/vacations.

honestly, it seems like a real reckless way of spending cash.

I feel like the confidence of reduce risk of flats is worth it. It’s definitely something that I worry about out there.

Technically you can bring money with you when you die but wouldn't do you any good. So spend it buying a second truck for Off-Road use only.

 

After swapping them several times you'll be wondering why you did it cause that's gonna get old quick.

 

Real talk: Do your offroad routes actually rate beefier tires? I offroaded the piss out of my SL rated Cooper RTXs, way beyond what I though they could handle, and did well on the street. Not as burly as my current ST Maxx E rated tires, but got the job done at a much better fuel efficiency.

If you get a second set of wheels/tire also consider getting TPMS for them or put your current TPMS in a pressurized capsule and keep in the cab.

 

I use to do it every fall and spring on my last Tacoma, not anymore. Plus you have to store them somewhere.

 

I did that with a truck I had with a snow plow on it. It was fun the first two times after that it was old.

 

Ha ha, I like how you just took it to another level. On a more serious note, I think changing out wheels/tires would get old pretty fast.

I kept my stock wheels and tires. But then again with all my vehicles, if i upgrade or buy aftermarket, i always keep my stock parts in case i decide to sell or decide to go back to stock. As someone said earlier, i can see swapping back and forth getting old after a while. I guess what i'm saying is, it's up to you haha.

 

Just buy a second rig to attach those wheels and tires to...

 

I have winter tire and 3 season tires. Is this dumb for an area that gets 3 minutes of snow, 353 days of rain and 1 minute 36 seconds of sun a years? We do what makes sense to us. I have thought about a set of offroad tire for the amount of time I get out. It saves on wear and tear when on road. Makes sense to me anyways.

 

If you had a lift at home or easy access to one then I don't think it would be all that inconvenient to switch the tires out a few times a month when you go offroad. Zip the lugs on/off and you're good to go, you'll have it down like a race pit crew in no time

If you have to bust out the jack stands and floor jack every time...yeah that's gonna get old

 

I've thought about it, but changing tires for every time I wanted to go somewhere would probably get old.
