I do light Off Roading with my C Load Duratracs without issue. But if I had a dedicated set, I'd probably get E Load Duratracs. (45 lbs vs 51 lbs)

Lucky for me, my Duratracs have the 3 peak snow designation, so I don't swap tires twice a year now.

Swapping tires and wheels on weekends or for trips is something 18 year olds do when they have nothing else to do. Winter vs summer tires, yes. That's a swap every six months. For two days? C'mon man.

Do it. Especially if you have:
    • The time/energy to swap them
    • The room to store them
    • The discipline to wait for a good deal and the ability to recognize said deal.

OEM Steel wheels can be picked up dirt cheap. Add super aggressive loud noisy tires and go wheelin'.

    Or

Wait for a good deal on OEM Offroad take-offs with relatively fresh Goodyears. Keep the Offroad wheels and sell the Goodyears and you'll have a 2nd set of alloys for the price of steel wheels.

    ...my thoughts exactly.

I have the SL Grabber ATXs and they take a beating. No complaints whatsoever.

That said, OP, is your second set going to be MTs? Or ATs with a beefier load capacity?

Don't do it...I intended on doing that with my jeep many years ago...got some super swampers for wheeling...swapped them once or twice and then didn't bother after that...wore the swampers out real quick.
Just buy a used jeep for wheeling and put the good tires on it...it'll wheel far better than a tacoma anyway.

I changed tires once a month on my street driven autox car. Mostly because not only was it street driven, I did hwy trips with it too.

Frame was stiff enough a jack would lift both tires on one side, so it was fairly fast to do.

After a few years of that, I just ran the race tires all the time. It was a lot more fun. :D

Side note. Tire rubber ages out. The compound loses it's performance over time. So your second set of tires will more likely lose performance from age deterioration than from actual wear.

I wouldn't do it. I did the same with my dual sport. Even with 2 light wheels it gets annoying. Not bad, but it does add work to what should be an enjoyable trip.

Sounds ok if you ask me, but you also need an impact driver or good cross crow bar, torque wrench, hand lift, jack stands, wheels chocks, etc. With the right tools, swaps are easy.

After reading these messages, I have decided that my first post was wrong. Don't do it! Just the thought of changing tires all the time is tiring me out! Find a tire that best works for all your specific needs and go for that one. Buy based on need, not based on the cheapest. If you only buy 1 set and a spare to match you can afford to buy quality.

I’m considering the same thing. A set of aggressive E load tires for offroad and a set of street tires. Some people have a second set of snow/ice tires.

Man, you guys are lazy. With a good floor jack and a cordless impact you could swap wheels/tires in like 10min.

I actually think it's not a bad idea, especially if you put lots of street miles on and only go offroading occasionally. The street tires will perform way better for commuting duties than an aggressive set of MTs.

I run 2-3 different sets of tires. Its pretty common. Makes no sense to run beadlocks and bias ply tires when going to work or the grocery store.

I run a 33 AT on a normal wheel and for weekends and trips I run a 35 MT with beadlocks.

It takes me 10 minutes to swap tires. Just buy an electric impact for cheap and go.

HF 3 ton jack and a torque gun, it wouldn't be so bad. But it would be annoying. Could prob have it done in 20 mins

I have that setup but for snow. i swap them around a couple times a year depending on the weather that's coming in and how long it lasts. Takes about 15 minutes to do and have been doing it since I got the truck. But you do you

Buy some cheap used OEM alloys or steels for $100-200 here on TW or craigslist. Maybe look for a set of used tires too, they will be cheaper with less tread but you won’t need all the extra tread for vacation use only.

There are no ellipsis in that post you quoted. Thanks for the tip though.
