Regearing my tacoma.... no Drawbacks???

Whats up everyone. Been researching heavily on the forums about re-gearing, adding 33's, adding aftermarket equipment etc. etc., and I'm really wondering what the general consensus is on re-gearing and its drawbacks. I absolutely HATE doing things to a truck that I could end up reselling in a few years, but I really cannot deny the fact that re-gearing does nothing but positive things to the truck.

In the following video, Carl talks about the fact that the Tacoma is geared very badly in stock form, and that much of the 280+ hp is wasted because of this. He says as soon as he re-geared to 5.29 he had more speed, better MPG, and just overall a better driving experience. He also says that Toyotas reasoning behind gearing the truck in this manner is because of "EPA ratings" and Toyota trying to squeeze "fake numbers" using the 3.9 gears.


Here are my two questions:

1. Has anyone re-geared and resold their tacoma, and how did the buyer view that and its resale value?( or did you even disclose this info)

2. Is there anyone here who advises against re-gearing, and why?

Literally..... two big threads specific to only gearing. They are not buried at all and are posted on at least a couple times every day.

 

You will never get your money back on what you have put in to your stuff. Most people even see it as a bad thing because you don’t know how good of a job was done on the install. Most people that want to modify want to do everything themselves.

 

Yes, but could regearing scare off a potential buyer or even a dealership??

 

No, just don’t expect to get back what you bought the gears for when you sell your truck

New gears isn’t visible. If you were to resale it to a dealership you’d likely take a cut if they knew the gears were changed. Stock form - max value for the most part. Add a turbo, lost value. Add a tonneau cover - gained value. Add 35” tires and a 6” lift - lost value or no gain.

Bottom line is for most every scenario if you want maximum resale value it needs to be mostly stock. There are some exceptions of course but dealers have easier time selling it used in stock form rather than used and modded left and right. I personally would never go and buy a lifted truck for example. No telling what type of beating the truck took and that’s how many view it. As for gears though, you’ll get nothing at all from your investment. It’s 100% loss on resale as dealers can sell a truck with stock gears to just about anyone.

 

5.29 damn, im sure its great for city driving but have fun on the highways.

Plenty of power with my 4.3 stock gearing.

honestly, if your worried about a dealership not liking that you changed gears, just don’t tell them. The new owners will just have an awesome surprise

4.3 gears are not great on hwy, i cant even imagine 5.29s. With 4.3s im running around 2k in 6th gear at 55 mph. I mean its not bad, but could be better.

Drove my buddies 2019 AT and it seemed fine. Mind you it was like a 10 min drive.

Yeah I'm gonna probably regear eventually after tires but I will definitely keep researching before I pull the trigger. And you too man!

 

Yeah OP, keep in mind many have 4.30 gears which are great

 

I believe 5.29 is actually close to the Stock MT . 6th on 5.29 is 2500RPM at 70-75mph. Same situation in manual

 

I see, so the gears themselves are geared lower in the MT. I know @tonered has that chart in his sig, i looked at it awhile ago.

I knew for sure our 1st was lower but did not realize that about the other gears.

 

Some mods retain value while others do not and it depends mostly on the buyer. Modification on vehicle still under warranty will turn a lot of people away. Good expensive modifications will retain some value.

From a regear perspective, you can choose to mention it or not. Given the complaints about the transmission and all of the positive social media in regards to regearing you may get some of your money back or none. Again it depends on the buyer.

Receipts and maintenance logs can help sell a modified vehicle.

 

You don’t want to lug the engine either, I wouldn’t want anything below 2k rpms at highway speeds in 6th(MT- ever since Toyota added a 6th the auto it makes talking about trans gears awkward). Automatics have higher overdrives because if the engine is in danger of damaging itself from lugging it’ll downshift, not so true on a manual. Lower revs are only good downhill imo.
