Honestly are all these wifi smart opener necessary? Guess you could say im old school key to house remote for garage. But friends do say once you start using alexa/google home all your devices become a necessity

I’d suspect install issue with either the opener or door than. I’ve had no issues on these units. That’s more a sectional door than a roll up. And those Wayne dalton doors are junk, only 1-1/14” thick, bs “insulation”, super thin sheet metal. On top of that the rollers Wayne dalton includes on their doors are the cheap crap plastic wheels on a shaft. They are flint stone wheels that drag and can drag enough to cause enough resistance and issues with the opener… any opener including overhead/ceiling mount.

pm me with some of the issues you were having/can remember and I’ll give you my take on it and possible causes. I sure hope your not doing any warranty work for sensor related issues? That’s the most common call and 9/10 times it’s because someone knocked them out of place with all the crap people jam into those corners. I don’t work or gain anything by recommending liftmaster, it’s my experience but I’d seriously like to hear exactly some of the issues and I maybe able to help

Edit: I think you need different installers if your having door and opener warranty issues.

Necessary no, convenient yes. But even if it’s WiFi capable doesn’t mean you have to use it- it’s not a requirement for operation

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
lol... I'd say you're right about it being an install error if it happens infrequently.

But we've got approx 80 of these installed on our job, and 50 of them have had call backs on them (being generous) and not all for the same issue.

Most of the call backs have been jumped track, or cables unspooling. But also the dead bolts failing and the wireless connection on the lights failing.

Also... these things aren't new. They've been out for 10 or so years. They've always been notorious... and none of the roll up door guys, I know, would ever recommend them.

Assuming your door can utilize it; Jackshaft. No question.

I was going to replace my 15 year old Genie, just because it was old.

Called Genie tech support and asked the lady if a new one would hold up as good as my old one. She was honest and said no. She also said they have a lot of problems in areas that have a lot of lightning...frying the board.

When you say jumped track, I’m assuming rollers popping out? But both that and cables unspooling are in fact install errors on new installs (issues/warranty within the first week or so) cables unspooling are likely because the door ie springs aren’t properly balanced- most common cause. But if they were working for an extended time before issue it can be both install or user error (can still be unbalanced door regarding the cables or even a owner leaving a broom or something in the way of the tracks causing it to jolt) if the auto lock deadbolt did malfunction and say didn’t disengage when the door was coming down it can also cause the same jolt but it wouldn’t be the cause if it didn’t disengage when the door goes up. I’ve never seen a lock malfunction on a new unit (only once on a 10 yr unit but it is possible). The likelihood this was the reason for every warranty is highly unlikely imo. The rollers popping out could be either install (only if it happens within the first week or so imo) or lack of lubrication (more common imo). Lack of lubrication is not a warranty issue. In fact most issues with a door that occur relatively soon after install are likely install issues but if it’s been working for some time (couple weeks +) it’s more likely a user error.

these units have a cable tension device that detects if there is slack to prevent damage unlike overhead ops. So for the cables coming off the drum something seems “off”. It’s also likely the wireless lights losing its connection is the owner tried setting up the WiFi or program vehicle and during the process erased all the codes so it just needs to relearn (simple button press) again this isn’t warranty either but it’s always possible for a bad circuit board (like anything else). I’ve had 1 opener have a bad circuit board otb, not the jackshaft thought.

I didn’t mean the jackshaft openers were new in itself but the 8500W is (1-2 yrs) which did get revamped from the older non WiFi unit addressing some of the previously prone issues. Also if it’s a circuit board failure- unless made apparent during install There’s no warranty on such item from any manufacturer. So you really shouldn’t be eating such cost imo. We always recommend customer get a surge protector for their piece of mind, on any opener.

I wish I could put my eyes on some of your warranty calls, I kind of have a nac for it

I will never buy any Alexa-type devices but I added a ChamberlainMyQ/App to my opener because my wife is very forgetful and leaves the garage door wide open too often.......

I thought I heard this was discontinued? I installed 1 for a customer and meh. It’s still a diy opener and if you don’t install it yourself I wouldn’t recommend it if you are paying cost plus install.

not sure if I mentioned this already but there is a new model coming out with an integrated camera. I can’t wait to test that out and see how good the camera quality is.

Edit: my mistake it was a stop sale order because lawsuit/infringement

Definitely not necessary but i like that it will tell me if the garage was left open. My wife still uses the standard remote in her car.

Buddy of mine bought a Ryobi garage door opener and said it was hot garbage. The keypad that you mount outside the garage door in case you don't have your remote wouldn't even send the signal to it. He was pissed because i told him about my Chamberlain and didn't listen. This was a few years back so maybe they've gotten better.

I'm not a huge fan of the personal invasion, but the wifi garage door is a must for me. I can open it when I am not in my car. I can open it when my neighbor needs something when I am not home. The best feature is that I can see if I spaced out and forgot to close it without having to stress. If by chance I forgot to close it and realized it when I was 10,000 miles away, as long as I have wifi service for my phone, I can close it.

Actually it’s not necessary to have WiFi on your phone- it does need to be able to connect to the internet. But as long as you have WiFi connected at your home then you’ll be able to program your door from anywhere in the world.

If you set the parameters in the settings you can essentially use it as a security device. Set it up to be notified when your door goes up whether it be certain days and/or certain times ie. Mines set m-f from 8-5 because I’m at work, so if it goes up during the set days/times I’ll get an alert
