Dealer says I need to use a machine when doing brakes - otherwise there will be vibration

Brake job at the dealer is $350. I said I’d do it myself, then the salesman said they use a machine that prevents vibration of pads after installation. Has anyone had their brakes vibrate on them after install?

 

No. I've never had a set (on any vehicle) vibrate after putting new pads in. Just make sure your rotors are in good enough shape or else change those at the same time. Are they talking about resurfacing your rotors?

Hes refering to them using a lathe to resurface the rotors. New rotors does the same thing. Or if youre not having any vibes right now, you would most likely be fine to slap some new pads on with your old rotors.

The vibration would be felt in the steering wheel while braking.

I will admit, that is a good sales pitch that probably works on a ton of people.

 

If you’re installing new rotors and pads, just do a search for proper breakin procedures.

There is no “machine” unless they’re talking about resurfacing older rotors.

 

Just buy new rotors if you do it yourself, rotors are relatively cheap...no sense in resurfacing old ones

It sounds like they are talking about resurfacing the rotors, warped rotors would be what would cause a vibration in the brakes.

 

Thanks for everyone’s input. I have new Wagner pads from Pep Boys but I’m going back to get new rotors too

 

i had to call the dealer service on something like that once
told me my 3rd brake light was out and wanted 20-30 to replace the bulb, i have changed exterior bulbs before and could readily climb up there to fix it so i told them to show me.
she walked me out and them hit the brakes and the 3rd light was working

 

can you not just take the rotors in somewhere to get them resurfaced?

 

Rotors are cheap...standard Wagner ones are like 40 or 50 bucks for a new pair and they just slide right on. Way easier to just put on new one's imo.

You can buy really expensive ones...drilled, slotted, etc. For our trucks I don't think it's worth it, just a standard set and replace whenever it's time to do your brakes

 

Sometimes resurfacing the rotors is called "machining" the rotors. Also heard it called "turning" the rotors.

 

Off topic, but when replacing plugs + wires, do I need to do the distributor cap/coil packs at the same time?

 

Dont machine unless there's a current vibration problem or you have grooves in your rotors. Make sure and bed the brakes after the brake job.

 

I'm surprised no one has mentioned they were probably talking about machining the rotors.

 

just do the plugs and use the recommended denso or NGK dual ground standard copper core plug, you can replace the wires and use only denso or ngk brand wires, coil packs you can leave alone.

Dealers almost always lie about what you need, mark things up substantially and use their slime-ball sales tactics to pressure you into doing things. Brake jobs usually cost quite a bit anywhere. If you can do them yourself you can save a lot of coin.
