Steering and bigger tires

I've read some things about our steering rack and tie rod ends not doing too well with 35s or even 33s. Not sure exactly what that means, though?

I've also had a few guys tell me they had to bow up on their steering wheel after adding 33s or 35s (with negative offset wheels as well I think). How much did your steering effort increase after bigger tires?

 

Unnoticeable, even offroad. Drives like stock.

35s will definitely blow some joints apart but 33s aren’t known for it

Not sarcastic. I'm on 35s for the summer and run 33s in the winter. I'd say a 1/4 of my miles are offroad to include various trails in Colorado and Utah, Poison Spyder, Golden spike, Rusty Nail, Top of the World, Gold Bar Rim, Seran Wrap, Eagle Rock, China Wall, Chinaman Gulch, T-33 Plane crash, and on and on and on. Keep in mind I am rock crawling my Taco

No issues with steering and 35s.

I wonder why 2 guys told me their steering effort increased so much? Dramatically.

Alignment differences?
Scrub radius changes?
I know one of the guys who said steering effort increased had -25 mm offset wheels.

 

I'm not sure, I can't imagine the alignment being that much of a factor, expecially since I'm running a sticky tire compared to most people. Everyone usually has similar alignments with +4ish castor.

Might need more opinions.

I would say it's the limit of my Taco at this point, there are a couple of shady obstacles and others have "alternate" (the IFS line) lines you can take.

We should retrofit a Tundra or LC100 rack. It can be done, Marlin did it.

 

What rim width and tire size?

 

Lemme see if I can find that info before I just start making shit up.

 

One guy's setup was F5 16x8 -25mm with Cooper STT Pro 305/70R16.

The other guy I think was @Jibbs who said he has to man-handle the steering wheel at a stop or slow speeds. I think he's running STT Pro 35s, but don't know his wheel specs.

 

Mine steers fine with 37’s. As long as they are rolling. It’s a little harder stopped. But I try not to turn the wheels when I’m not moving.

 

Trying to think.... I do end up turning my wheels when stopped while backing into my driveway. I have to nose into the curb hard right, cut the wheels left and reverse.

Only reason I'm making this thread is to learn enough keep me from doing anything I might really regret while daily driving.
