Did you not read the article? The HOA approved the variance against the deed restriction so the family was legally permitted to build the playscape without repercussion. It was the neighbor that got their panties in a twist because they could (gasp) see the damn playscape from their own yard. I mean, Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ, they were once kids too. I bet daddy only gave them forks and outlets to play with.

As for HOAs, most are open boards that residents elect other residents to. Mine is 100% volunteer comprised of community residents. How is that taxation without representation? I think you're confusing a managed community, which has an independent company in charge of enforcing the deed restrictions. Even those have resident board members, so...

    Did you not read?

THEY APPROVED IT WRONGLY. It was a mistake, and they caught it. Happens all the time. My investment bank accidentally sent me 2 IRA rollover checks once. They took that shit back.....

You don't pay HOA dues? HOA boards are cesspools of corruption. One old cranky lady on mine was having her yard mowed by the HOA landscape crew. Another was hiring relatives to do stuff. Another signed a 20yr irrigation contract with his pal....

Since my subdivision isn't finished w/ over 80% of the houses being sold, sole accountability is the developer to the HOA management company. Our last HOA was hiring a relative's landscaping company that was an hour drive away to come and do it. None of the residents have any vote on anything, nor would it matter since the developer has the majority. No homeowners are on any boards either. The developer won't hold the HOA's feet to the fire regarding spending increases/budgets/expenses.

Not saying it'd be any better run by actual homeowners, but it can't be much worse.

The neighbor merely claims it was wrongly approved only because they don't agree with the HOA board's decision to approve it because they personally opposed it. They also have a . Don't like it? Options are to join the board, deal with it, or move.

And yes, I pay dues. I'm also the elected president. We're an open board with all records available to residents. 6 years, zero major issues. I've never had to force a homeowner to do anything because a simple, polite, and respectful reminder has been all that's been needed. We're also all-volunteer, so it's our money we're managing. It's a great community and we all act and treat each other like neighbors. There's a home for sale right now - 3 car, 4 bed, 3 bath, 2 story - if you're interested. $150/year dues.

I can't speak to what your experiences have been. Like anything else in this world, an HOA is only as corrupt as people let it be. But you can't let the actions of one paint the picture for all. Otherwise, all BMW owners would be penisless assholes who can't use turn signals and hate their mothers, and I personally know a BMW owner who uses his blinker at least once a week and loves his mom.

I recommend a 100% homeowner run community. See above. We all keep each other in check, and we all gang up on outsiders. A lot like TW....

    HOAs are a mixed bag.

Many suck - and too often the folks who volunteer to serve on the board are the folks with nothing better to do than to stick their noses into other people's business. Not always of course. I had a friend who served as his HOA president for many years simply because he loved his community. My mother in law lived in a ranch-condo community, front porch not visible from any of the public property nor from any neighbor's property, yet received a Ding Letter from the HOA for something silly like too many flowerpots.

Flip side isn't always a picnic either. My home is in a non-HOA community; we just have county code / ordinances which covers a lot of stuff - but doesn't seem to require the owners of a nearby house to put siding over the OSB on the extra bedroom they built.

    (Edit to remove personal insult)

My HOA board members all think they are wonderful, fantastic, altruistic people too. But they are just greasy gangsters.
