Will these give me hyperflash?

I know that with the front turn signals and without the proper switchback kit, any LED gives hyperflash. Will these aftermarket taillights which seem to have LED turn signals give me hyperflash on my 2011?

update: Have now realized that some manufacturers of these taillights include load resistors, which should solve the issue.. I’m just an idiot and did not look around enough. Thanks for the help!

    The short answer, yes
    The long answer, yes

There is, however, a mod you can do to your flasher relay because 2011 and under 2nd gen flasher relays come with dual shunts, whereas 2012 comes with a singular shunt and the single shunt 2nd gens are an odd animal to get right.

I have these exact tail lights in this color which have been lightly used if you are interested in picking them up for cheaper. I have no use for them and they have been collecting dust in my garage, PM me if you want to buy them. :)

I would likely take you up on the offer, but I need to know I can do the mod first. No way I could deal with hyperflash. Do you by chance know if there’s a thread for this?

Yes, that would fix the issue. Couple things I would tell you is that that is a simple time-based flasher instead of a thermal flasher like the truck comes with OEM. That is why it's able to handle LEDs without going into hyperflash.

If you do that, the flasher relay is on the back of the fuse box in the cab. It's a pain in the ass to get to unless you take apart the lower piece of dash, but it can be done blindly (I did it).

I would also say that while that flasher is fine, I opted for the bigger brother https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6V6762/ strictly for its hazard flash functionality, and the "ambient" lighting it provides on lock/unlock. The ability to only push the signal stalk slightly and have it blink for six flashes on the turn signal is just a bonus for me (I suggest changing it to 6 flashes for that as it's enough time to change lanes).

I see. One more question.. would replacing the relay with either of these also allow me to put LED’s in DTRL/turn signal without hyperflash? That seems too good to be true, but who knows..

I’ve just done some more reading, and the link you provided says this particular relay won’t work with Tacoma’s with dtrl.

So, they will still work and fix the issue with the LED taillights, correct? Just not for putting LED’s in the front?

If you disable DTRL, they'll work with the ones up front too. My Tacoma doesn't have DTRL and that flasher makes everything "just work" and gives me neat hazards when I'm off on the side of the road, making sure everyone knows I'm there.

I see, but I’d like to keep my DTRL and fix the LED taillight turn signal issue. Any way to do that you know of?

Correct. To use the Smarttap flasher, you have to eliminate the DRL by replacing the 3 way flasher harness with the grey plastic jumper block.

I haven’t done this, but I have envisioned 2 ways to get the DRL back.

    1. An easy way to get dim DRLs, would be to hook the dim park light circuit in the front turn signal socket into key switched power.

    2. Getting true DRLs back would require 3 relays. 1 to supply power to the DRLs with key switched power. The other 2 relays would be wired into the wires from the 1st relay to the bulbs using the NC contacts. The relay coils would be wired to the original truck turn signal wires from the flasher.

The result would be that the DRLs would turn on with the key, and would be alternating off, on, off when the turn signals were activated.

I had this type of taillight for a short while but from a different seller:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0743W45R3?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

These did not have the hyper flash issue as the resistor was built into the housing. Fully plug and play.

The alternative is load resistors for each individual tail light bulb wire that powers an LED.

This, this is what I needed. Now just have to find them in onyx instead of smoke. Thanks good sir!

Since you have experience, what part on this is the blinker? C-Tube or brake lights?
