Never heard of Frog's Loop but the entire traverse can be done without armor or sliders. The roughest trail was Trey Mountain and it's closed now.

Solid information. I would definitely get used if I were to get into it. It’s probably not going to happen for a while though, have some things coming up here soon that will definitely affect my current financial sitch so I gotta prepare accordingly.

Let me know when you ready. I got buddies that own bike shops, and lots of friends with bikes lying around.
You don’t need $$$ to ride. Sold a nice bike not long a go for $800. Sold another buddy a Kona hardtail for $500.
You only need a $$$ bike when you feel the need to spend money. You will have a ball either way.
Buying a lightly used Demo with warranty is a way to go as well. Just bought my Bronson in that manner.

It does look like even new hardtails are pretty affordable these days.

27.5, dropper, 1x would probably be what I'd end up going for. Are trails more smooth out here making full suspension more of a luxury than necessity?

The last one I had was a Bronson and it was nice.

I roll full suspension because I bomb everything I can.
Riding my mtn bike is merely keeping me in shape when I am not on the KTM.

Have you hit Windrock Park yet? They have a nice DH section with gaps for the east coast. Pisgah has some chop and ledges, but no huge launches.
Hard tails can IMO be better for these trails out here. I myself am much faster/controlled on a hardtail on the single track out here, but recently got the Bronson to take up to my house in NC.

Gotcha, I'm more into cross country stuff, never got into sending it off jumps and I'm too old to start ending up in the hospital.

Yes and no. Let’s be honest, a hardtail in the hands of the right rider can be a slayer. Regardless of location.
Overall yes, a hardtail will be more at home for the masses in the SE. As Josh mentioned, places like Pisgah and Elijay are areas I’d highly suggest leaving the spine twister at home and grabbing a proper mid travel bike.

You might want to look into the short travel segment. Modern geo and suspension kinematics have created a new breed of ‘down country’ bikes (shorter travel [110-130ish rear] bikes). I’m a bit of a fanboy of this type of 29er. They can pedal like a monkey on crack and feel way deeper than the travel numbers would suggest when the trail gets fun.

Well I'm trying not to look at all.. it's @Gilmorec61 fault that I even pulled up any bikes. :D

I tested a few 29ers before but liked the agility of 650b for slower technical.

Haha I feel ya. I have no intentions of buying another bike right now, but I’m always looking at listings on PB.

Depending on how long ago you demoed 29ers, it might be worth giving one a go again. Granted I’m the pot calling the kettle black. I went from 26 to 29 and have yet to give a 27.5 a go. Planning to demo a 5010 when the Santa Cruz fleet rolls through this March or April.

It would've been 3 years or so ago. But yeah the 29ers at that point rolled nicely but on tight switchbacks where you had to hop around they just felt a little large. So I wouldn't count them out. I did rent a 29er in Vancouver and it was good, the trail I chose to ride it on... Way above my skill level so a lot of hike with bike.

Hey guys, passively looking for some new wheels locally. ISO 16x8 -25mm offset or 3.5 backspacing. Wanting a little more width for looks as well as to keep me a little farther away from obstacles on the trail. I have some Method MR804 16x8 0mm offset with custom 3D printed Toyota center caps to potentially trade + cash depending on wheels. The fake bead lock ring is beat up, but i could have that cleaned up if needed. Not looking for a perfect set, rash is okay because they will get beat up.

I would also potentially consider trading wheel and tire combo (currently have new 285/75-16 Patagonia Milestars) for a 16 or 17 inch wheel and tire combo with similar offset specifications mentioned above and a 33”-35” tire.
