Wondering if the target is in advertising or some kind of sales. "Keeping up appearances" is a huge thing in those circles.

I don't doubt it's legal - but you'd better believe I would immediately begin an intense job search and (after being secure in that new position) post it widely across the myriad job boards and other locations with my info removed but not the company's info.

    As an aside:
Most Exit-Interviews ask the wrong question.
Instead of asking folks why they're leaving, they should be asking why the person started looking.

I drove a 2004 Corolla around for 6 years longer than anyone would have expected me to because A) it was 100% mechanically sound, and B) it was paid for. It wasn't the prettiest car in the lot, but I deployed a lot, didn't need anything flashy, and it allowed me to save so much money I was able to write a single check when I bought my house.

Sure, I could have afforded a better car, but I didn't want to spend the money.

This boss can fuck right the fuckitty fuck fuck off.

Depending on the environment the person works in, I can see this as a valid concern of the employer.

If you're in an occupation where you interact with customers on a regular basis, your vehicle can have a big impact on the customer perception of you and your company.

    In sales, perception is everything.

Many companies will tell sales people to not drive too nice of a car as the customer may see this as you making too much already and not want to deal with you.

On the flip side, if you arrive to pick up a customer in a jalopy, it can make the company look bad.

Now if this individual is in an office environment where he simply comes in and sits at his desk, then IMHO it's none of their business.

They should uber to work and crack open a bottle of Jack Daniel's and drink the whole bottle at their desk. I bet they would forget all about what car the person drives.

You'll find lots of stories like that -- one of the surest paths to building financial wealth is spending less than you make!

Most everyone that's either on the sales or business development teams at my company get issued a vehicle as part of the job. They get a choice of a white F150 crew cab, or a white F150 crew cab. Three year old sales vehicles get handed down to the plants, old plant vehicles go to the quarries. Someone in purchasing came up with that as a way to save money on the fleet overall.

That aside, any company that tries to maintain appearances even with it's rank and file employees, is not the company for me. I'm just now getting over the fact that Tshirts and jeans are considered inappropriate attire for the laboratory.

So what if you drive a better vehicle and have a better house than your bosses? Can you tell them to step up and represent the company in a more professional manner? Just asking for a friend.

    Not all companies do so.

My company provides a car allowance and issues a vague guideline of "appropriate" vehicles but it's not really enforced as the gamut is deep and wide.

If a company is going to expect a certain appearance, it needs to be upfront at the hiring process about it so that there's no confusion later on about what is required/expected.

If it's a condition of employment and someone accepted that, it's on them to maintain their side of the employment contract.

Years ago, I had a job as an outside salesperson ("account executive") for a media planning corporation. It was my job to walk into small businesses, car dealerships and real estate agencies and tell them why they would be fools not to advertise on local television.

With that said, my daily driver also happened to be a project car and weekend warrior. It was an '86 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe with mismatched body panels, mismatched wheels and tires, loud exhaust, horrible paint with flaking clearcoat and surface rust, etc. It didn't even have working A/C, so I would drive around in the summer with the vent windows popped all the way in. The head had leaky valve stem seals, so it would fart out a blast of oil smoke whenever I started it (think Uncle Buck).

However, mechanically speaking, the car was solid and a total blast to drive... it just looked like something that had been dragged out of a salvage yard.
I used to get the most interesting looks from people when I would pull up in front of their business and get out of the car - a clean-cut guy in a nice suit... it must have been like watching a diamond shoot out of a baboon's ass.

He could part out all the stuff on the back and use the money to make a bad ass recovery vehicle.
