I've helped a few folks with that process. I can't recall their usernames on here. Hopefully they'll chime in and help you out if it's feedback you're looking for. Otherwise, if it's just a process question, I'd be happy to help if you had a specific question.

Can vouch for @JustDSM ability (magic) to tune. I was bone stock, then added cam gears, shortly after I got my first tune from him. Night and day difference. Then I added 70mm throttle body and had him retune. Another notivible difference. Later added urd intake and thorley headers, It really moves now for a naturally aspirated truck on 33s. Getting rid of the majority of the rev hang really made drivability much better. Easy acceleration when passing people, and pulls to red line.

I never took a bite of the Bully Dog apple, so I can't speak to that specifically, aside from the fact that most folks prefer the TRD tune over it.

@JustDSM's tweaks to the TRD tune were/are worth every penny spent migrating to HPT - better throttle response and no more (MT) rev hang! Make the move ASAP and without hesitation - you won't regret it!

I did. My BD tune was not as bad for me as for some other people. JustDSM's magic made everything run better; better throttle response, better afr's, better gas mileage (hard to quantify cause I'm on the throttle all the time). Custom road tuned to the way yours is set up and other factors like gas quality, elevation, etc.

Also manual trans so the rev hang delete was worth it all on its own for me.

Also Justin is an awesome human being, humanitarian and car whisperer

Does anyone know of a tuner in the San Diego area? It really seems like HP Tuners would be the way to go for pushing the 1GR-FE and I would prefer to not have to DIY a tune.

While not physically co-located, @JustDSM and @nd4spdbh can hook you up with HP Tuners just the same remotely. And I would be willing to bet much, much, much less than San Diego area costs.

I'll hit em up than, thank you. I just want to push the engine more after having my SC a few months but no one local can help beyond installing the parts. So I worry about basic bolt ons giving me trouble and spending thousands in credits while I mess stuff up.

Yes, join the club. You are not alone. A lot of us are trying to better our knowledge and self along the way here. I will confirm that the individuals I mentioned are very sharp and not "experimenting" in any sort of haphazard fashion with remote tuning. There praises are numerous and ALL done with the Toyota OEM fail safes in place to protect your engine along the way.

Haha, I feel like I’m following your journey. You’ve provided me with many answers in many different threads. Hydraulic throw out bearing, clutch, and magnuson thread. I should just start PMing you directly. It is awesome having someone pave the way for what seems like the same mods I want!

So, my 2009 4WD ECU I ordered (as per their website) apparently is from a 2008 2WD (as per accompanying paperwork). Are the 2WD and 4WD ECU's the same for the Tacoma?

hmm. I know there are references to 4LOW operations in the HPTuner tunes (for auto trans stuff) so not sure. Is the part number on the ecu the same as your current ecu? Also if the ecu they sold you was touted to be a 4WD ecu but was not... then id also bring that up with the seller.

Part numbers aren't the same cause we are putting Tacoma ECU into a Hilux. Already brought it up with seller.

I am pretty sure the 4WD piece is irrelevant in this case but could check a couple of numbers. When I was pulling the ECUs for @Au1gr it was only a matter of auto or manual and 4 or 6 cyl variants within the mode years.
