Fragile Windshield Glass on 2020 DCSB OR

I've had my 2020 OR since November 10th of last year, so I've literally only been driving it for a little over 2 months. The truck currently has 2600 miles on the odometer. Despite it's young age, I already have SIX big chips on my windshield. Four of them also have small radiating cracks that make the entire size of the damaged area just under an inch. So far none of the cracks have spread, but with the 100+ degree days of summer here in Phoenix not too far off that won't last.

We do have a problem with rock-induced windshield damage in AZ, but I find the sheer amount I'm experiencing with this 2020 to be abnormally high. At this rate I'll be replacing the glass within the next couple of months, on what's basically a brand new vehicle with less than 5K miles on it. From past experience I find that once the factory glass is ripped out and replaced it's almost never the same, so I'm a bit bummed by the situation. Also, what's to say that a replacement windshield will be any less prone to rock hits? Am going to go through a dozen windshield replacements over the life of the truck? I sure hope not!

I owned a 2018 DCSB OR for 20 months before I got this Taco, and while it caught a tiny chip here and there, the amount of damage was far less than I'm seeing on my new ride. Defective batch of glass? Just plain crappy glass? Angle of the windshield? Bad luck? All of the above? Anyone else out there finding that their windshields are being too easily damaged by rock chips?

My insurance started charging a deductible for windshield replacements because they have to do so many.

New windshields are just super thin to keep weight down. My wife is on #3 in her Ford. I put 1 in my 2011, the 2017 needs two chips repaired.

Like I said, my 2018 wasn't this bad, and my wife's 2016 4Runner with 70K on it has nothing but little pits here and there. The chips on my windshield are not repairable. It will have to be replaced.

 

Mine has held up OK, but you aren't the first person to complain about this. Some have dubbed it "rice water glass".

Making matters worse, it apparently costs a pretty penny to replace due to the TSS sensor. Maybe there's a better aftermarket version available?

 

Im at 12k miles and on second windshield which is cracked already, so ill just rock the cracked windshield.

Never had this issue on any of my vehicles, this windshield does seem very brittle.

I had less than 15k on my 17 and also had about 5 chips before it spidered to the point of being a serious safety issue. Zero chipped windshields before with any of my Tacomas or other trucks.


And I also worked night shift. So only about 10% of the time other cars were actually on the road with me.

Is what it is sometimes. Get ready for the "never happened to me so there's no crappy glass" crew to jump in here at any time.

 

Interesting. How close are you following the car in front of you? I tend to stay pretty far back. My window has the normal little chips, but it doesn’t seem that bad. BTW, I’m in traffic every day

Plexiglass windshield protector? Ya newer windshields are not as chip resistant as older cars it seems. my $Runner had a chip, wife's Sienna has a chip, none on my Taco yet but only have 3k miles...

 

"Rice water glass." Sounds about right. Luckily for me, my insurance company gives me $0 deductible glass coverage. I'm just pissed that I need to have it done on such a new vehicle - not from ONE nasty hit, but from an overabundance of accumulation.

 

I also ride a motorcycle and I can feel the debris kicked up by other vehicles so I stay the hell back when driving my truck and my windshield is just fine.
In coastal area's the sand beats the hell out of windshields.

 

Is AZ one of the 1 free windshield replacements a year states?!

 

Do those things actually work for rocks? I doubt it. They keep some bugs off of your windshield, but I think that's about it.

 

I keep one of the $10 glass repair kits in the glove box and fix the rock damage as soon as I can before it spreads. I know you can have the road side places do for “free”, but it still counts as a claim with your insurer.

 

The overly fragile glass phenomenon is caused by following too close.

 

If his driving style hasn't changed why would it matter? He wasn't cracking windshields before.
