Welded a bunch of square receivers on a space ship that we are shooting next week so that we can rig off of the frame for cameras and camera platforms.

It can`t hurt to get the moisture out. The water cooking out could cause porosity

I venture not very many preheat weldments that thin.

Some people are amazed water comes out of steel when heated it seems physics is no longer taught

You should practice one sided Tee joints and break them to check your penetration

Butt joints are the hardest for a novice to learn on you tend to weld cold to keep from burning through .

The thing with school you have enough machine to use 1/4" using thinner material gets so frustrating when your first learning to make the puddle dance how you want . Don`t have the time under the hood to read the puddle so you burn through before catching it and weld colder till you have a mostly cold lap which to many looks just fine.

Probably should just let this go but.......
    Steel does not absorb water.
The moisture comes from the air and is a byproduct of combustion. It condenses on the steel.
    Physics.

Cold air meets hot metal, moisture, correct?

Kinda like a windshield fogging up, cold glass meets hot air inside?

Right. Your windshield didn't contain any moisture, the air did.
While nothing in the welding process would be thought of as "cold", it helps if you realize that there really is no such thing as "cold". "Cold" is not a thing. Heat is a thing (it's a form of energy) but cold is just a word we use to describe a lesser amount of heat. So while we would think of 1000°F as "hot", it is 500° "colder" than 1500°F :D
I think that some of the moisture may be coming from combustion during the welding process but I think that's part of what flux or gas shielding is supposed to prevent.

    I'm not a physicist, I'm just a plumb dumber. :D

Hey guys, newbie welder here. I am looking to switch careers and to go to school for welding. It's an evening class, twice a week for 5 months. 150 hours. The price is $3,550 and it's at a nice school. I went there for auto mechanic when I was in high school.

I have a few quick questions before I decide to make this jump since it's obviously a huge step/change in my life and I don't know anyone personally who does welding.

    - For once, is that price reasonable? It isn't just for MIG or TIG it's for just about everything in one class. It says I will earn industry certs - OSHA 10 Hour General Industry and AWS D1.1 (I have no idea what those are) There's another school near me but it's 5 days a week for a year. 900 hours. Obviously that's the better school but it's more money(11k) and I honestly have too much going on in my life to be locked up every hour of the week M-F.

    - What are the positives/negatives to working in the welding industry?

    - Some people tell me it pays really well, others say it doesn't pay as good as you think. So what is it? Lol I can't find solid information on the internet to confirm either way.

    - How hard is it in your vision and eyes?

Thank you for your time, seriously. It's hard to make this decision when you don't really have anyone you know who does welding for a living. I have been contemplating it for a few months now and the class starts up in about two weeks so I am a little pressured.

I am wondering this too, if a welder who does it for work can experience vision issues sooner than people who don't weld. I know the hood is supposed to protect you, but I have accidentally flashed myself a bunch and I'm a hobbyist.

Not welding related but I been sharpening these blades for a customer. I’m assuming they are some sort of tool steel the way they are eating carbide inserts but look at the rainbow colored chips.

    Triangle Tech or WTTI ??

The thing with welding .it won`t pay what you think and you can make good money or both true at the same time.

What field do you work in now ?? At what rate ??

Can you afford a pay cut till you work your way back up to a decent rate ?? This is the catch all !!!

Just what type of welding job do you plan to get production Job shop fabrication ??

Work on the road lots of overtime or a strict 8 hour day.

In the end it comes down being able to pass the Welding test to get in the door where you went to school is a minor point

If your looking into welding for the money your not going to be happy It is the love of the craft .

We have all kinds of welding Jobs in the Lehigh Valley pick up the telephone make some phone calls .

Enter level and top rate just ask those questions

Some places are tied to China and rather slow Others are going gang busters

Yeah, I worry about my vision because my eyes are pretty bad. My prescription is strong so I worry about putting more strain on them.

Hey! I am in the Lehigh Valley!

    It's actually LCTI in Schnecksville.
I do have the time and money to do the schooling right now. I am an auto mechanic/salesmen. I help my Dad out at his shop.(shameless plug, www.cjauto21.com if you ever need a truck)
I honestly have no idea which type of job I want to take with welding. I really know little about it besides I did it in a rotation class in high school for 30 days and enjoyed it. That was 12 years ago now. So I really don't know if I want to specialize in TIG or what.
I knew it didn't pay a lot, but I don't really make a lot now as it is. I just want a job that is rewarding (if I don't take over my Dad's shop one day). I do think I would like fabricating like welding up racecar chassis or making bumpers, something like that.

I appreciate the insight, specially a guy from the LV!

Boss asked me to weld a couple pieces of aluminum together and I hadn’t used my spool gun in awhile and was a little nervous cuz I wanted it to come out nicely for him. I came home from work tonight and busted out the spool gun and practice on some 1/8” really quick and this was my first pass. I was pretty happy with the results

    41DC902B-3882-43A4-A9E7-0FAD190BEA64.jpg

So then I had to weld some 1/4” hinges to some 1/4” C channel and then the other side of the hinge to some 3/8” flat bar

Pretty happy with it after not using the spool gun in months

Yes I know where Nazareth is I lived on Penn Dixie rd for years .

Took some classes at Schnecktech years ago time flies might have been 30 years ago.

Like I said talk to some of the Valley People in this field.

With the Economy going gang busters getting a job with no experience might happen pretty easy being fresh out of school when times are slow most don`t want to hand hold a person with no job experience in the field

It seems we all pay our dues one way or another not very often do you walk into a orbital Tig welding jobs without putting floors in garbage trucks and trailers

You aren't going to believe this but I live on Penn Dixie Rd currently! Lol. What the hell are the odds of that?!

Do you think that class at LCTI is a good idea or a waste of time only being 150 hrs? What is ASW D1.1 cert?
