Need a new engine. 1GR-FE interchange question.

What was your "stock tune"? Bully Dog, or OEM TRD?

 

it was installed in 2015.

oem TRD.

there's not a dealer that will touch it with the mods that have been done. even before i did any S/C mods.

 

I am curious what you find with the tear down.

To add to a previous post, a 2012 to 15 is what you are looking for.

You can go earlier, and remove the SAIS system, but you'd also need to purchase an HP Tuner, and have someone like @JustDSM give you a hand with the tune. To be rid of that system, without the prohibitive CEL.

You can also remove the system with a '12+ engine, but you'd need the HP Tuner plus block off plates made.

Your choice.

 

No need for HPTuner stuffs if you are swapping in an earlier 1GR to a 2012-15 truck. Just swap over the SAIS goodies onto the earlier motor.

 

I could be wrong but I believe there are no ports in the heads prior to 12 for the secondary air system.

 

May not be what your plan is, have you considered installing a Chevy V8 in place of the oem Toyota stuff. Was reading a post here recently, the swap was not bad and the V8 is much narrower.

Possibly if the guy is local or open to offering advice, it could be a better resolution.

 

This is correct.

 

Thought ports were in the manifolds not the heads.

 

The tube is in the manifold but ports to the head thru the flange

 

Or rather is part of the exhaust manifold.

 

ahhh yes looks like you are right. 2012+ motor it is.

 

If you weren’t in Cali I would say Ls swap...but don’t think you could pass an inspection...

 

Interesting, I was under the impression he was in Colorado. Not sure how strict Colorado is regarding inspections and smog checks.

Rebuilding it with an oem engine, the super charger and a good setup is valid too.

Just recall the photos of how small the V8 looked when inside the Tacomas engine bay. The owner showed some videos and the truck was no slouch off road.

im already hp tuned without SAI so that stuff wouldn't be going back on anyways.
id love to swap in a ls3 but with all the other stuff (trans, tcase, electronics) i may hold off on it for now. this is my off road car and i'm going to choose minimum down time. ill swap in a low mile take out to get back on the road.

I’ve been on the TRD tune for 60-70k hard miles or so with no issues. She runs RICH. Sounds like the incorrect tune was uploaded or it’s a separate issue entirely.
