Lol we do it for the gram. The lights were dimmed to the lowest setting. It’s amazing how much light shows up with a 30 second shutter speed

I was taking nighttime pics the other day and blew my friends mind with a 30 second exposure and no lights on. It looked like the trees had spotlights on them.

haha yup, few minutes of shoveling and all 4 Maxtrax and it walked right out. Nearest cell service at that point was probably 15 or more miles away into Canada

It's all about having the right gear. I HATE being cold, but I love being IN the cold, because I have a million layers on!

For me, Anything to avoid crowds.

This trip used dual battery with house battery running electric blankets and big sleeping bags at night... never even slightly cold at night

Is that last pic Taylor camp? I stayed there in October. It's amazing how isolated you are there at night.

Woah!! Yep that was from The Taylor camp. That camp spot is by far the coolest place I've ever camped. You basically have that whole canyon to yourself. We damn near took our photos from the same angle! I was there just one month prior to you being there.

Nice pics! I did that drive using my old Jeep TJ. What camera did you use for the star photos?

    Thanks

I was using 2 cameras then. (Note, those pictures were completely moonless but 15-20 second exposures each).
The nite pictures that I ended up posting are from the Sony RX100 M2. (Note that camera has evolved alot since the original M1 up to M7 now I think with massively varying prices). Been using it since 2014. That thing would blow away a cell phone camera from 2014, doubt that is so true today, but it is still my preferred travel camera in addition to cell phones because performance per size.

That camera is a pretty good compromise for a small point and shoot camera with a pretty good sensor size and lens 'speed' (F/1.7 or f/1.8 when zoomed out if i recall).

Those pictures were taken with a $10 bendy tripod and manual shutter release. Pictures were taken on manual control, set aperture to open, iso to pretty large (but not too large, to limit noise), manually open shutter for several seconds and see how it comes out.

Those exposures were on the 15-seconds or so time-frame. It was difficult to get shots without aircraft stroves in them really, especially with the truck.

A full frame dslr camera should do just as well, but I hate the bulk. (Other camera on hand was micro 4/3rd Panasonic dmc-gx1 with f/1.7 and was just as good for this job).

Probably latest generation or 2 cell phones (which have f/1.7 or so lenses) could take a similar picture with the help of a tripod and a way to hold long exposures (can they do that?) Havent tried that so I cant guarantee. Certainly any full sized DSLR or equivalent camera with manual mode could as well with a decent f stop lens.

(I used this equipment and settings because that is how I take long exposures of rocket launches and meteor showers.)

I went to a note 10+ and then got the moment case, 58mm telephoto, and 18mm wide angle, and I've been enjoying those so far. It's no dslr, but I don't feel the need to get a nice point and click either. I've only played with them a little so far, but I would recommend checking them out. Shopmoment.com best thing is they can be used on any phone just need to get the iPhone case if the gf wants to use them.
