Oil gets all over when the filter is removed

How do you guys remove the filter without getting oil all over the place? I tried to put a hole near the top of the filter but the oil never drained out and still went all over the place when I pulled the filter. Is there anything I am missing here?

2003 V6 motor.

 

I just let it go everywhere and clean up later. Just make sure you take the skid plates off to make clean up easier. I've heard of some people using a shopping bag around it as they take it off which Im going to try this weekend.

 

I just put a bottle under the drain by the filter. Loosen it and wait for the oil to drain in to the bottle. Thought it worked quite well. It seemed to drain mostly before I took it off. Good placement Toyota!

 

LOL man I hate the filter location on the 3.4 oil gets everywhere so on my next oil change this is what I'm getting (Oil filter relocation kit) unless someone can chime in and tell me there is a cheaper way to do it I'm tired of getting oil all over the block and the front Diff.

 

ya a water bottle works well, which is what i use. after most of it drains into the bottle, cover it back up then wipe the rest of it off

 

OP has a 1st gen... Completely different motor and oil filter placement...

There's no real way around making a mess without relocating the oil filter...

It's awesome how Toyota decided to put the oil filter so close to the motor mount and threw in a grounding strap in close proximity for good measure...

 

Now I feel really dumb! Sorry for being an idiot and not reading the "1st Gen. Tacomas".

 

The first time I thought I cleaned it up and I didn't realize that a bunch was sitting on the skid plate till I backed out of the driveway and made a real mess. I was hoping to find a solution that didn't involve removing the skid plate. That relocation kit might be the ticket. Where do you relocate it to?

 

Lol... It's all good... If I didn't hate certain aspects about my old X-Runner, I would have been reaping the benefits of the cake walk oil change the 1GR has to offer...

 

I haven't done it yet so I don't really know I'm pretty sure you will still have to remove a skid plate to change the oil I know i want my skid plate to protect it still.

I'll do a write up when I do it.

 

Anyone have a pic of this filter? Im just curious no real necessity... mine is perfectly vertical under the block.

It drips down the block and onto the skid plate when its removed.

 

Yeah the 2.4's are easy the 3.4 on the other hand is a pain in the ass I'll take a pic and post it if I can.

Wow i feel lucky... of all the cars i've done the taco is by far the easiest... that looks like it sucks

 

Here is a shot from the driver side fender well that's about the only way you can see it without taking off the skid plate.

 

When i had my Mustang i used to take a sheet of aluminum foil and place it under the filter and form it into shape as to allow the oil to flow out the filter once it was loosened up.....never had a mess to clean up!!!!

 

There is no rubber piece under it. It just trickles down the entire block.

 

If you do get a oil filter relocator kit get the ones with steel braided hoses.I got the one without and one hose bursted. Lucky I saw it close to home and took it off. It also adds about 1 quarts to the oil change. I placed it up under the front bumper and you could get at way easy.

 

My old bronco was awesome. It had the 300CI inline 6 and I could probably literally climb in the engine bay and close the hood lol.
